BRIAN LINDSTROM: A LIFE IN FILM

A remembrance and celebration of the life and work of acclaimed Portland documentarian Brian Lindstrom. Various of Brian’s friends, colleagues, and film subjects will present clips from his movies and discuss his impact as a creator, citizen, and humanitarian. The evening will conclude with a screening of his powerful 2013 documentary feature ALIEN BOY: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JAMES CHASSE.

Brian was one of this planets greatest examples of what we can be when we live a life of service, kindness and generosity.

Please come and pay your respects to a great filmmaker and a magnificent human being.

Nick (Richard Blackmon) has a marketing job, a steady girlfriend, and crippling student debt. Struggling with the weight of expectations, he opts to downsize: dispensing with the luxuries he doesn’t need, cutting costs, swapping four wheels for two. It’s a path which leads to savings he hasn’t anticipated, physical and spiritual learnings, but which has others questioning his mental state…

Mark Hoffman’s debut feature film, inspired by Evan Schneider’s novel, is a lean, low budget gem, shot in Portland, Oregon, in black and white, with a fine score by Mark Orton (The Holdovers). Fittingly, for a tale about the virtues of simplicity, there is nothing superfluous or decadent here. But unpack it, the film reveals precious insights into the nature of “value” and “worth”, how materialism affects our sense of self, and, perhaps, the dangers attendant on any self-improvement project.

TOKYO STORY (1953)
This legendary Japanese drama directed by Yasujirō Ozu, starring Chishū Ryū and
Chieko Higashiyama, follows an aging couple who travel from their rural village to Tokyo to visit their busy adult children. Finding themselves treated as an inconvenience, only their widowed daughter-in-law shows them genuine care and kindness. The film is widely regarded as Ozu’s magnum opus and one of the greatest films in the history of cinema. It was voted the greatest film of all time in the 2012 edition of a poll of film directors in Sight and Sound magazine. This is a rare opportunity to view this masterpiece by one of cinema’s greatest directors, on the big screen. The way it was intended. You will need a handkerchief.
