s a kid
i spent every summer at our family camp in north turner, maine
it was on a lake
but named a pond
it was rustic
simple
nostalgic
the walls of the rooms didn’t reach the ceiling
and as kids we’d climb up and spy from above
i remember a bb gun in the bottom drawer of my nana and pa’s dresser
and a handmade sling shot with a jar of marbles too
i tried to kill crows with that sling shot
but always missed
(maybe on purpose)
there was no tv
so at night we’d have a fire on the beach
pulled grass from between my toes to throw into the flames
and i’d catch fireflies in the yard and feed them to the spiders that lived under the deck
my pa wired that camp
and the light switches were in the strangest of places
above the front door in a knot of the wood
and high up the wall in the living room and you’d have to use a yardstick to reach it
i was told that the light stitches were hidden in case a burglar broke in
that the robber wouldn’t be able to see stuff to steal
now, because i’m older, i think that the light switches ended up where the wires end ended
simple as that
but i do love the idea of pa up on a ladder
cutting the wires short
and thinking about confusing an intruder at night
