Why schoolgirls need to get down and dirty with rugby 11/04/2015

"One of my best friends at university, and I don't think she will mind me saying this, was 'the fat girl' at school - then she found rugby. Her name is Rochelle Clark MBE, and she is now the most capped England women's player of all time, with 103 appearances and a rugby World Cup winner's medal to her name." Thank you to our coach for finding this article! This is just another reason why this sport is amazing!

Why schoolgirls need to get down and dirty with rugby Rugby is on the rise for girls in schools and could be overtaking traditional sports. Chloe Hubbard, a keen player, explains why the sport is so beneficial

We are very proud of our team for their first performance yesterday against both Reed and Willamette. We won both games, and while we still have work to do, the potential this team has is mind blowing. Looking forward to our next game!

So we're about to get real for a few minutes. We've had a lot of women sign up to find out more about the team and as they write their email addresses down, there are a lot of women who say how they're not in shape. One of the biggest reasons a woman, throughout her entire life, decides not to join an athletic club is because of the fear of being "fat" and "out of shape". Who can blame them? Almost all women get this message hammered into them that you have to be skinny and really in shape to even think about joining any type of athletic club. It's what our society and culture tells them.

Well, in women's rugby, we're putting our foot down. In rugby, we literally need all body shapes to make a successful team. On PSU's team, there are women on our team that, were you to see us on the street--we wouldn't draw to mind the image of an athlete. But we are. To be completely honest, rugby needs the big girls just as much as we need the smaller girls.

You don't need to be in shape or below a size 10 to play rugby. Can't run very fast? So long as you're willing to get up and keep trying, we have a position for you. And these aren't positions that we're just accomdating you with and hoping for the best. No, these are positions that do well with your body type and ability, and we show you how to succeed.

Playing rugby lets you learn that your body is amazing, no matter the size or shape. We don't teach you fitness just to get you "in shape". We teach you that so long as you get up after a tackle, so long as you are willing to support your teammates, so long as you are willing to try, you are an athlete. You are a rugby player.
Don't let your fear of not having a good enough body stop you from trying. Let us teach you that your body can kick ass just as much as anyone else's.

No one has ever regretted playing rugby.
