On Earth Day 2024, we are reflecting on one of our successful, highly-sustainable projects, the Kiln Apartments 🌱🌍♻️
We place a high priority on creating healthy, durable, and highly energy-efficient buildings. Kiln Apartments is located in a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly neighborhood in North Portland and features 19 units with ground floor retail. Energy performance goals for the project were ambitious—with the project earning 'Passive House' distinction, making the project the first and largest, new construction market-rate apartment building in the U.S. to achieve Passive House certification. “Passive House” was originated in Germany in the 1990’s as Passivhaus. There are approximately 20,000 buildings constructed to meet this standard. As a point of reference, certification for this building required energy performance to be approximately 65–75% better than Portland’s already industry leading code requirements.
The Kiln project features a highly insulated envelope; high-performance triple-pane wood windows; space heating through wall-mounted, hot water radiant heaters served from solar thermal roof panels; continuous ventilation through centralized heat recovery ventilator; and deeply inset, south facing windows protected from unwanted solar heat gain by sunshades.

Grateful to be a part of Skylab Architecture expansion and shared space with PDX CONTEMPORARY ART where the experimentation, design, and fabrication is bound to be impactful to our community. Congratulations to the entire team on a beautifully renovated space!
The vision for Skylab’s new home began with several questions, “How can our studio evolve from a dedicated workspace to a playground for the art and design community? Where can we find a space to integrate gardens, host events, incorporate a fabrication shop, and grow our studio?”
The perfect site turned out to be a triangle-shaped corner lot in the city’s Northwest Industrial district consisting of two steel buildings – one a large 1940s-era Quonset hut – and an adjacent storage/work yard. The resulting transformation reflects Skylab’s design culture, where experimentation, collaboration, and community are in the forefront. The firm also has the good fortune of sharing space with PDX Contemporary Art.

We are thrilled to announce that our renovation of Fountain Place Apartments has been awarded the 2023 DeMuro award for excellence in preservation, reuse, and community revitalization by Restore Oregon!
Built in 1911, the Fountain Place Apartments was among the first buildings in Portland to use a residential apartment typology in the downtown setting. We are proud to have played a key role in the renovation and unique approach in bringing seismic safety to a historic building without compromising its integrity (and, in the process, providing much needed structurally sound affordable housing in Portland’s core).
Thank you to Restore Oregon for the honor and to our entire project team!
