Today is Frank Moore's 99th birthday. Frank transitioned peacefully this week surrounded by family. We'll never be able to adequately summarize the impact that Frank had on thousands of people in his life as a solider in WWII, builder and proprietor of the Steamboat Inn, fly fisherman, champion for conservation in the Umpqua and Steamboat Watersheds, husband, father, and surrogate grandfather to a sprawling flock of humans from all corners of the planet. Throughout life, his doors and his heart have been open to others, welcoming newcomers and old friends with a handshake or hug that would either cure, or cause, a chiropractic issue. What we felt and observed in Frank in the last golden decade of his life, was an attentiveness and sincerity in almost every interaction...as if the encounter would be the last opportunity to express his sentiments, and be a final goodby. He left nothing unsaid....whether through laughter or tears. His capacity to be in the moment with another human is an example all of us can look to as we navigate our own precious lives. Frank's charm, humor, love, and wisdom will be missed, but his spirit lingers everywhere. The Uncage crew feels extraordinary gratitude for all that Frank contributed to our lives and it's been an absolute honor to share in a small chapter of his. If you haven't seen it already, please enjoy the full length version of Mending the Line. We love you Frank. We'll see you on the water and hear you in the wind. ❤️

Once upon a time Mount St. Helens blew her top, and 7 years later an intrepid mountaineer in red chiffon reached the freshly crop-topped summit and began a Mother's Day tradition like no other. "Miss Dish And The Volcano" is a beautiful story featuring one of our favorite mountains, produced by our good friend Ian McCluskey for Oregon Field Guide, with footage shot by another good friend, Jim Aikman.
This year Mount St. Helens will enjoy a respite from the fancy scrambles of decked out Mother's Day climbers. All moms need a break. But if you locals catch a glimpse of that well-known dome in the distance, maybe lift your mimosa up with us in a shared thank you to that beautiful mountain, and to the woman in red chiffon who mothered in a more inclusive era in mountaineering.
Miss Dish And The Volcano: How Kathy Phibbs Changed The Face Of Northwest Mountaineering When Mount St. Helens reopened to climbers after its historic eruption, a woman in a red chiffon dress and pillbox hat changed the face of Northwest mountaineering forever.

What are secrets? Secrets are stories that are meant to be kept hidden, unknown by others. They are the stories that are held close, selectively shared with intimate trust that in the sharing the story won’t meet its own end. On the other side of a secret, of course, is discovery. How do we approach discovery responsibly? What do we do with the gained knowledge of something that was once a secret? How do we respect the intimate trust that was accidentally bestowed when the secret was revealed? 🤔 We’re looking back to the story of Valhalla, Oregon’s once-secret slot canyon. On this day in 2016 the world got to take a peek behind the Cascades' curtain when Oregon Field Guide unveiled the Valhalla episode at Portland’s iconic Hollywood Theater.
We look to the past not with longing, but with learning. It’s within our own stories that meaningful discoveries can be made.

Drone technology has given us wings that were once unfathomable. And with great power, comes great responsibility. As FAA licensed drone operators, we fly only where permitted, and are sensitive to the wildlife and landscape around us. Drones are awesome, but they can also be super annoying, and sometimes there are tempting shots that should not be nabbed. As drone tech evolves and their usage increases, Uncage The Soul remains committed to abiding by best practices. Sometimes it’s best to remain grounded, even when you have the wings to fly.
This is the third in a series presented by TechTown, a coalition of local technology companies powered by Prosper Portland. The owl has been a visual and spiritual symbol of Uncage The Soul for nearly a decade. The owl embodies so much of the soul of our work. We aim to be as perceptive, dynamic, intentional, and refined as this remarkable creature. To be still and aware, to be active and focused, and to spread our wings with trust and gratitude. This video wasn’t created to try to DO or BE anything. It’s simply a tribute, honoring an animal spirit that has been a companion to Uncage The Soul for so long.
A note of thanks to our friend Ken Shults for his kind tutelage in the patient art of Great Grey Owl photography. There’s a link in the first comments to an Oregon Field Guide episode about Ken. Highly recommended.
This was shot on Sony a7iii/200-600. The owl was not disturbed or baited.
