Mika Paredes. Magical human, divine spirt. FOURTY YEARS OLD TODAY . My other 1/2 1/2. We've walked a long path together from the early days of clarklewis, to dinners in my backyard, to the kitchen & dining room at Beast (building it together from the ground up). To "Best New Chef" in 2009, (which any real chef knows is just the measure of your support team) on to a Beard Award (same- doesn't belong to the chef, belongs to the crew) and an entirely new business together started last June. We've lived together, worked together, laughed (a LOT) danced a lot, sang together, cried together. It's been a long journey of 20 years together and today marks her 40th birthday. Hard to imagine what my life would be without her. Confident that this particular partnership was written in the stars. Congrats to Mika, and to our 20 years too, thank you universe for keeping us together for all this time, today,
tomorrow and for as long as you give us.

Just over a year ago I left my safe haven of my N.E. 30th corner (where Beast and Ripe had been for nearly 15 years...). My movement became expansive and I got to go ALL over the world. It was truly an incredible 2023.
I spent a lot of time alone, with friends, with family, and even in close quarters with many people I'd never met, all of whom had something to teach me.
In February I went to Japan and ended up deciding not to do a project I had long been anticipating . Letting go of that project was quite simple. I find as I've aged it's getting so much easier to see what serves me and what doesn't and simply, and without remorse give up that which isn't resonating.
From Japan, I spontaneously took a one week trip to Northern India, where I saw one of my dear old friends from 28(!) years ago- and let some of the ashes from my best Friend Rachael's body float down the Ganges river at Haridwar.
When I returned home I made a trip to Los Angeles to celebrate the joyful expectancy of my friend's Danielle and Harry's baby girl... and in May I spent a week in Kauai with my good pal Alison.
In June Mika Paredes and I opened up inside and have loved every second of bringing that level of delight to people treating themselves.
In July and I went to celebrate our good friend's Alex and Bekah's nuptials in Denmark, and had the opportunity to eat .
In August we traveled up to Anacortes for a family reunion and a chance to send my 100 year old Grandfather's ashes off into the Bay, and in September we went to see the INCREDIBLE show put on for her birthday in Los Angeles.
I returned home for only a few short weeks before I left for a month with one of my nearest and dearest pals - to teach in the Loire Valley, head on a road trip across Eastern Sicily, and up to Tuscany to teach a week of classes at .
When I finally settled back home it was mid October. I spent a lot of time foraging for mushrooms with my 75 year old neighbor Lesley, with many long drives thinking and talking about big subjects like death, astral travel and the magic of the woods. ..(continued below)

ALERT π¨ TOMORROW (Tuesday 8.22)!!
I can't believe how much you guys love TV!! Hahahaha. I get it, I get it. But since I love MAKING TV, but can't stand WATCHING myself on TV... y'all are gonna have to do it for me, and tell me how I did!! (Ok, never mind- don't tell me... all that matters is we had FUN). Filming was a BLAST π₯ as always. The titans battle IRON CHEF and all around bad ass (and sweetheart, if you must know)- - but he's up against some FIERCE talent with the likes of and . As usual I'm a hard-ass, and put the fear of god into everyone πππ. Taking s**t seriously and calling myself (and others) OUT has always been my strong suit. Let's take it to the back alley y'all -!!! It's a FIGHT.
From the network: "Premiering Tuesday, August 22nd at 9pm- βTitans vs Michael Symonβ β SEASON PREMIERE
The Titans get the shock of their lives when 's best friend, Iron Chef Michael Symon, enters the Triple Threat kitchen. Friendship doesn't stop Bobby from making this a fair fight as Michael faces off with his Achilles' heel ingredient! Round three is full of heart as the chefs strive to impress tough judge Naomi Pomeroy."

Wanted to take a moment to thank the OTHER HALF of this business, who is really the most IMPORTANT and talented part of this business, and who is not on social (DAMN - that is Soooooo cool, and makes me feel so happy for her) - she's smart, funny as hell (GORGEOUS, those of you lucky enough to know)- and one of the most natural talents I've met. Next year we will celebrate TWENTY YEARS of knowing each other and working together. We are soooo lucky. We both have amazing husbands in our lives backing us up and supporting- and also each other and that just feels really good. This is a GRATITUDE POST y'all. You know that old-ass movie ??? You can taste our love in our product. You can FEEL it. It's small, it's limited, it's different. We aren't just like--messing around making something because we want to make money. In actuality we both work other jobs. What we are doing is trying to create something you can SENSE, TASTE and FEEL that is like... you know, the way you feel when you listen to a perfectly pressed record that's never been played before. We feel like the public deserves that feeling!!! It's the same s**t that drove us to make Beast in 2007- and we are carrying that vibe forward. I promise PROMISE you'll be able to taste the difference. For this flavor pictured... I scoured the market for the fattest juiciest blackberries from - and Mika mixed up some crème fraiche frozen custard base (and my that I mean ... handmade on the stovetop). And VOILA !! Summer in a pint, vibes on a cone. Come get some this weekend (starting today Friday by the Pint) and Saturday and Sunday we will be scooping and kicking it together old school-style . Can't wait for you to see about what I'm talking about.

I was 15 when I first heard Sinead O'Connor. Her debut album The Lion and The Cobra was so fiery, full of life, death, love, venom, pain and joy. It couldn't have spoken more resonantly to me. Her voice, her words, her spirit pierced my soul and made me feel seen in a way that nothing else could. And then she did it again. She made another album that BROKE ME WIDE OPEN. Not only was her voice truly powerful, her words cut through to the TRUTH-- she hid nothing. The raw vulnerability she gifted us all helped me through those years of my life, and shaped who I became as an adult. Still today as write this I can hear in my own mind with 100% clarity her voice in my head. She made me aware of politics I didn't know about as a small town girl from a white Oregon town - "England's not the mythical land of madame George and roses, it's the home of police who kill black boys on mopeds, and I love my boy, and that's why we're leaving, I don't want him to be aware that there's any such thing as grieving". The song 3 babies I'm pretty sure was about a few abortions she had had, at least that's what it meant to me, and I listened to it on repeat when I also made that same difficult choice. Still do, and I think about my 3 babies all the time, most deeply when I hear that song, and I return to it to remind myself of my own humanity. The tonal anger in "Last day of our acquaintance" was played a million times on repeat during a particularly unpleasant time in a relationship I desperately wanted to leave but didn't know how to. And lastly - when my best friend died last year, one of the first things I did when I got home to our stereo was to dig for SINEAD, turn the volume LOUD and play this song alone in the house... sobbing and wailing :
I am stretched on your grave
And I'll lie here forever
If you hands were in mine
I'd be sure they would not sever
My apple tree, my brightness
It's time we were together
For I smell of the Earth
And I'm worn by the weather".
Rest in power Sinead. You gifted so many in a way you probably never could have fathomed. We thank you. We owe you. We will work to repay you by continuing to speak our truths, loud- for all to hear.
