Check out 3 interesting glass plate negatives from a 1927 Portland Evening Express feature on John A. Whitney, the "Dynamite King." Whitney, who operated out of Falmouth, shocked reporters by kicking over a 50-pound case of dynamite and cutting open a stick to show how stable it was when handled correctly. He also asked the reporters to throw a stick at a cement wall. His aim was to prove dynamite was safer than the general public believed.

They distributed handbills—like the one shown here—with his photograph and description, asking the public for help. Similar announcements appeared in newspapers, and the case received widespread coverage for several years, including false discovery claims in 1923.
