Outside In

We’re still aglow, days after our most recent Urban Ed graduation ceremonies at our Employment and Education Resource Center. These images represent a small sample of how, through the hardships faced by those in our programs, we join instructors, colleagues, friends, and family members in celebrating their hard work and achievements. Our participants inspire us throughout the year, and especially as they look to the future.

At our annual Overdose Awareness Day Memorial this week, we remembered the more than 563 people in Multnomah County who lost their lives to overdose last year. The number was smaller than the previous year for the second time in the last 15 years we have been hosting this event—a confirmation that what we are doing is working—yet we have still lost far too many loved ones, friends, clients, and neighbors.

This is heavy work, and the depth of emotions and remembrances showed clearly on the faces of those reciting the names. But, as we always have, we will continue to remember.

Once again, we send love and gratitude to our own Haven Wheelock for guiding the proceedings, and to those who shared aloud or reminisced silently but in community about their loved ones.

Please join us Monday in remembering those we've lost to overdose. We are compiling a list of people to honor at this event, and everyone is welcome to add names to the form until Monday at 3pm.

Punk Rock Pride hits Saturday, June 20, and proceeds will benefit Outside In! Hosted by Not A Phase at multiple venues Saturday, the event features all-ages q***r punk bands at Performance Works, a drag brunch, and a range of vendors on SE Foster Road. It runs 3:00–10:30 pm. 🎸

We couldn't resist sharing another round of applause for Haven Wheelock and her award by Outside the Frame at its "We Could Be Heroes" event Thursday, celebrating 10 years of innovative filmmaking by youth who also often participate with Outside In programs. "It is such an honor that they are shouting me out on the anniversary of a decade of great work!" Haven said. OTF Executive Director Nili Yosha welcomed the nearly 400 people packing Hollywood Theatre, and OTF Board President John Duke, a former OI clinic director, presented the harm reduction superhero award. Congratulations, Haven, for continuing to conduct, and inspire, lifesaving work!
