Without these services, friends and family members often act as interpreters, but they can make mistakes that jeopardize a patient’s health.

Besides, who wants to talk about sensitive medical information or distressing pain in front of a relative?

Federally funded healthcare orgs are required by law via the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act to provide meaningful access to interpreters.

Because professional medical interpreters protect patient safety and their dignity.

You Have a Right to Have a Medical Interpreter No matter what your native language is or age, your health care provider is required by law to provide free translation services.

Celebrating woman-led LSPs According to preliminary research from the 2025 Nimdzi 100 there are 16 woman-led LSPs to highlight. Comparisons and by segment analysis.

Mutual Aid LA Network (MALAN), an information hub for mutual aid efforts, created a list of nearly 200 resources (link above ☝) to support those affected by the devastating wildfires and windstorm in Los Angeles.

Resources cover multiple cities and include shelters, animal boarding services, free items, informational support.

It’s the normalization for me 🥹 On one hand, I am fully aware that it’s actually kinda sad that the simple act of a hearing person knowing how to fingerspell was a “wow!” moment for me. On the other hand, this simple act was a small reminder that with representation and awareness, we do begin to slowly see changes in attitude and behavior. Also? I was literally thinking about what kind of content I could make for #InternationalWeekOfTheDeaf when this happened. Thank you, kind @heb employee! P.S. @heb love it when your employees know basic ASL (and how to treat Deafies with basic kindness) 🤟🏽 #DeafAwarenessMonth — TRANSCRIPT Wow, something cool just happened. H-E-B (Texas grocery store) Curbside. That person— (waves good-bye) — that person came up and started speaking. I gestured that I was deaf. They were like, “Oh!” And started to fingerspell my name. I was like, “Yeah, that’s me.” Just like normal. They were just like, “Oh, you’re deaf? Okay,” and switched to fingerspelling. Love to see it! This is why representation matters. Learn sign! Happy International Week of the Deaf!
