Global temperatures have risen about 1.3 degrees since pre-industrial times, which means that even if we were to globally cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero tomorrow, some amount of global climate destabilization would still occur.
LEED v5 takes these stressors on our infrastructure and built environment into account with the new framework requiring climate resilience.
Depending on what part of the world your project is in, climate impacts will vary.
Some regions are likely to experience flooding or storms, so strategies such as bioswales, raised first floors and drainage systems will be more important while in fire prone areas, buildings might require fireproof materials, fire breaks and additional emergency management planning.
Strategies to manage heat and conserve energy will be important for resiliency in most of the world.
This means that on site renewables, green roofs and high albedo building materials will continue to play a part in a resilient building future.

Whatever your views may be as to any military activity the US undertakes, the human cost is undeniable.
Each headstone was a young person who had hopes, dreams and a reason for going to war. Each of those boys has a mother left to grieve.
Today we remember their sacrifices.
ecoREAL Solutions and our Green Canary Software are built on bridging the gap between architects and contractors, working sustainability into every decision.
We believe a building is a whole, integrated system, not a set individual component parts.

LEED v5 significantly changes the priorities, viewing buildings as a holistic, interconnected system as opposed to a series of discrete decisions. Instead of focusing predominantly on operational efficiency, the new set of LEED v5 standard will focus on decarbonization, requiring tracking of both embodied and operational carbon. Within the framework, there is a heavy push toward all electric designs and a mandate for carbon monitoring and 25 year carbon projections.
Prior any tallying of points for credits, mandatory carbon, climate resilience and human impact assessments will need to be completed.
The entire lifecycle of the building will now be considered. Moving away from a one and done certification approach, LEED v5 will require that design metrics actually align with the operational reality over time.
Are you ready? Or just confused?
Either way, at ecoREAL Solutions & Green Canary Software, we are here to help simplify the process.

Pamela's closing address as we seek to build partnerships with green innovators in Malaysia, Singapore and across Southeast Asia to expand the global market for sustainability in architecture and construction.
Both ecological and economic systems are global, so why shouldn't sustainability efforts be?
Why shouldn't tools to simplify documentation be?
Why shouldn't Green Canary be?

What if a building could generate more energy than it consumes?
Here is an example of one that does.
In order to create a sustainable future and decarbonize our built environment, we need to look beyond net neutrality and start to design in a way that prioritizes net negative buildings.
Imagine a world where our cities could produce energy instead of having to import energy from dirty power plants far away.

Designing infrastructure in a way to support a low carbon future and preserve natural ecosystems will be integral to solving the climate crisis.
In Germany, some cities have experimented with installing solar panel roofs over bicycle lanes, turning everyday infrastructure into a dual-purpose system. These covered paths provide cyclists with shade during summer and partial protection from rain, making rides more comfortable and encouraging year-round use. At the same time, the panels above quietly generate clean electricity, feeding energy back into the grid without requiring additional land.
The concept is part of a broader push to integrate renewable energy into urban design rather than keeping it separate. By using space that already exists, such as bike paths, cities can produce power without disrupting natural areas or building large standalone solar farms. The panels are typically mounted on lightweight frames that allow enough light through while still capturing sunlight efficiently. In some cases, the energy produced can support nearby lighting systems, traffic signals, or public facilities.
Beyond energy generation, these solar bike lanes represent a shift in how infrastructure is imagined. Instead of serving a single function, spaces are designed to solve multiple challenges at once, from climate concerns to urban comfort. It shows how small design upgrades, when applied thoughtfully, can improve daily life while contributing to cleaner, more sustainable cities.

Welcome to the new East County Library in Gresham, Oregon
Last night the new East County Library was unveiled. The new LEED Gold certified library building was a collaboration between Holst Architecture, Fortis Construction and ecoREAL Solutions as a boots on the ground consultant. The Green Canary software system was used to assist in simplifying the certification process.
The new library also features a community auditorium, children's area, rooftop patio for reading outdoors and on site energy generation with a photovoltaic solar array.

Throughout a building's lifespan, it will use energy to heat, cool and power the day to day.
Much of our energy comes from fossil fuels so minimizing energy consumption and maximizing renewables is key
