I was so honored to have my middle-grade novel, One Good Thing About America, chosen for the Totoket Valley (CT) Elementary School’s One Book, One Read program. All 300 students, teachers and staff read the book, even the lunch ladies! On the final day, the school’s mascot, Rocky the Rockhopper Penguin, took the book about a Congolese girl’s first year in America and the book’s messages of empathy and kindness out into the community to other schools and organizations. Yay!

Here is one of my new neighbors on this bright first day of the New Year! I hope 2020 will be filled with good things for all of us: time for long walks, conversations and meals with friends, work we love. Speaking of which, I have a new middle-grade novel coming out in 2021! Needless to say, I am thrilled. Winter in Maine is the best time for curling up with the next phase of the process: working through my editor's comments and suggestions for edits.
If you're in need of books for the holidays (or just because it's winter and a great time to curl up with a book), Print Bookstore, 273 Congress St., Portland, is having their Children's Book Holiday Mingle tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 9, 1-3 pm. A bunch of children's authors will be there like Phil Hoose, Chris Van Dusen...and me!

Thank you Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators for a Golden Kite Honor Award for my book, One Good Thing About America. Nothing like a silver sticker to dress up a book cover!
Award!
My novel, One Good Thing About America, has been named a 2018 Golden Kite Honor Book by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. There was one winner and only two honor books of which my book was one. This is the only children’s literary award judged by peers. The award ceremony will be held in New York City in early February...what a good excuse to go to the Big City!

My book, "One Good Thing About America," has been chosen by the New England Children's Booksellers Advisory Council (NECBA) for their Windows and Mirrors list. These are the 2017 books that best exemplify diverse viewpoints. Thanks, NECBA!
Also recommended by the New York Public Library in their New & Noteworthy: Culturally Diverse Middle Grade book blog this summer. Thanks NYPL!
