PNCA MFA Collaborative Design

Join us tomorrow evening for a design impact panel discussion !
October 12th 7–8:30 PM in PNCA’s mediatheque, we’ll discuss: What does it mean to design for impact? How does design show up in different sectors — private, public, entrepreneurial, philanthropic, non-profit — or in cross-sector collaborative efforts? This panel will feature a conversation with local professionals who have shown through their professional practice and approach that design can be used to make a positive social impact. Learn about the way design shows up in their work and with what challenges they are using design to address and solve.

This Wednesday 12–2pm, Ron Bronson—currently in our Design Systems MA program—is leading a discussion at PNCA on designer’s role in harm in UX. Come join!

From : Part-mixer, part-discussion, this event will convene people interested in interaction design to discuss what the discipline of user experience has wrought on modern life, and contemplating what the future might look like. More about Ron:
Ron Bronson is a design leader & strategist with deep experience leading digital initiatives from ideation to post-launch. Outside of work, he’s a global speaker on service design. His practice is focused around Consequence Design which centers on interaction design harms (aka “dark patterns”), the intersection of technology in spatial experiences, and consumer advocacy in service delivery. He spent the past 4 years at GSA’s 18F, most recently as head of one of the government’s largest in-house design teams.

This year, Chair Skye Morét .meets.skye was one of the featured speakers. We look forward to attending Bend Design Con 2022 (and finding another log cabin to stay in)!

Our 2nd-year MA + MFA Candidates recently presented their Thesis Project proposals! Madeline Silberger-Franek’s Thesis is titled “Public Spaces for Mental Health: Creating tools for designing inclusive cities.”

Defining a collaborative framework for including the voices and experiences of people who have mental health challenges in the design process of public outdoor space. 

                               

Our 2nd-year MA + MFA Candidates recently presented their Thesis Project proposals! Ameenah Carroll’s Thesis is titled “Designing A Better Free Food Network: Exploring gaps in the Multnomah County food donation network to address injustices enabling food insecurity during the pandemic.”

To reduce food poverty for low income households during the pandemic, a better food donation network must be created. This procurement involves existing community based organizations strategically and efficiently sharing their resources to narrow the social and economic voids that hinder food access for the recipients they impact within Multnomah County.

                               

Our 2nd-year MA + MFA Candidates recently presented their Thesis Project proposals! Inbar Soffer Sharon’s Thesis is titled “(Q)TTC: Q***r and Trying to Conceive: Toward a more equitable future.” ***r

For families that do not fit the heteronormative structure of Mom-Dad-Baby, navigating the conception process from the desire to have children to actual pregnancy can be daunting. This project explores the myriad interpersonal and systemic challenges that arise for q***r couples along the path toward biological conception. How might we reduce the hurdles of trying to conceive while Q***r?

MFA Collaborative Design + MA Design Systems student project Bee & Bee PDX chosen as finalist for Fast Company's World Changing Ideas Awards 2021! Led by faculty member Skye Moret, students in the CD/DS program collaborated with Ivy Chuang, founder of Blendily, to create a honeybee habitat that would both be beneficial for the bees who make the hive their home and also benefit Blendily by supporting pollination of their botanical garden and production of honey to harvest for their organic skincare products. The students engaged in extensive research, ideation, prototyping, testing and ultimately building the working bee habitat. Through collaboration and time spent learning about real beekeeping in the field, the students produced an impressive habitat that considers the needs and experience of both the client and our ecosystem. A huge congratulations to our students, Humaira Tasneem, SJ Bowden, Sam Caruthers-Knight, Jake Crahan, and Jono Melamed on their winning design! meets.skye .yone
