Did a small Maine village help launch the U.S. Navy ?
In Machias, they told me there’s no question - and they have the receipts to prove it.

As you plan that summer trip...a look back…
In 1972, my dad got out of the Army and took a cross-country trip from California to Massachusetts in his VW Beetle.
He was in no hurry - and couldn’t go very fast in that Beetle anyway...but he did keep a log of the whole trip, including what it cost to drive coast to coast.
Total cost for gas from CA to MA in 1972? ⛽
$36.88.
Back then, he was paying about 35 cents a gallon.
Three days and 3,209 miles later - he arrived in Upton, MA, having spent a total of $75.33…
AND he needed a new battery.
Looks like he hit a few bumps along the way too.
Pretty wild.

- Maine DIFW identified the victim as Warden Pilot Joshua Tibbetts, 50.
-The crash happened near
Schoolhouse Pond in Avon around 11 a.m. Tuesday.
-Officials said Tibbetts was the only person on board.
The FAA said the plane was a Cessna 185F.
