Big milestone year over here 🎉🎊🍾

This year, 24 students I had the privilege to coach and mentor earned 28 Service Academy appointments and 20 ROTC scholarships. What an incredible group. Their success reflects the discipline, hard work, and commitment they brought to the process every step of the way. (academician)

Every student’s path was different, but the most successful ones shared three things:• self-discipline• a strong work ethic• a clear plan for success (academician)

Some earned multiple appointments or scholarships. Others earned one hard-fought appointment — and that one is just as meaningful. This kind of outcome does not happen by accident. It comes from consistent effort in academics, athletics, leadership, and preparation. (academician)

To all 24 students: congratulations. Your future is bright, and I’m proud to have played a small part in your journey.

If you’re hoping to earn a Service Academy appointment or ROTC scholarship, the right plan matters. Start early, stay disciplined, and keep moving forward.

Let's explore the components of the WPM!
The USNA Whole Person Multiple is a key concept to understand and use as guidance for your high school planning around academics, activities and athletics. Seek to do and be your best, and you will increase your WPM to the point of winning a Naval Academy appointment!

JROTC/ROTC cadets: you may have an extra nomination path most applicants miss. 🇺🇸🎓

Many students assume nominations only come from Congress—but your JROTC/ROTC unit may be able to nominate you to:
✅ U.S. Military Academy (USMA)
✅ United States Naval Academy (USNA)
✅ United States Air Force Academy (USAFA)

What to know:
📌 Your unit commander/director completes the form(s)
📌 You should request a copy + confirm submission (then watch it appear in your portal)
⭐ If your unit is an Honor Unit with Distinction (and you’re a Prospective Honor Graduate), you may be eligible for nominations beyond the “usual” academy match-up

Timing tip: Bring this up late spring / early fall as you start applications.

Real talk: This category is limited—so strong candidates don’t rely on one path. They stack nominations strategically.

🚀 That’s exactly what we do at Academician: build your complete nomination plan, deadlines calendar, outreach scripts, and checklist—so you pursue every nomination you qualify for.

Often, my students focus on the selection ‘weightings’ used by the Air Force Academy and the other US service academies. My advice is simple: maximize all that you can. The three main areas are: academics, athletics and activities. With an added focus to seek leadership opportunities in all three areas.

But let’s explore each area and how the ‘percentages’ impact your application.

Applying to the Summer Seminars!

Four service academies — USAFA, USMA, USNA and USCGA — all host high school seniors

The summer seminars at four of the US service academies (SAs) are very popular. Typically, they take place over the first three weeks of June. The only exception is the AIM program at the US Coast Guard Academy, which takes place in July.

All four academies over three separate sessions at each respective campus. The Coast Guard Academy also offers a fourth "virtual" session, too.

Why are they popular? First, they provide good fun with an ideal introduction to each of the service academies, including meeting staff, speaking to cadets/midshipmen, seeing facilities and gaining general information about the lifestyle, education and training available at each school.

The summer seminars are great events. Start planning now for the applications. I wish you the best of luck with the entire process!

I would also welcome an opportunity to speak to you about a coaching engagement — I provide active consultation on the entire admissions process, including preparation and review for interviews, essays (personal statements), activities and more for all five of the U.S. service academies: USAFA, USMA, USMMA, USCGA and USNA; plus, I work with students to purse ROTC scholarships for the Army, Air Force and Navy.
