Today we’re highlighting Mary Lou Thomas, a calligrapher, teacher, gold leaf enthusiast and experienced hiker (she summited every peak in the Cascade Range!) who was a member of PSC for many years.

Today we’re highlighting Meri Taylor, who got hooked on calligraphy when she signed up for a pointed-brush class with Carol DuBosch in 1999. Through that class, she found a generous community of artists in the Portland Society for Calligraphy and has been involved with the guild ever since.

This Labor Day weekend our amazing PSC Members volunteered their time and amazing skill writing guests names at Art in the Pearl! We hope that everyone who stopped by our tables enjoyed it!

What’s it really like to attend IAMPETH? ✨

We asked PSC member, Bailey Eckert (Bailey Eckert Calligraphy), to share a little about her experience at this year’s IAMPETH conference: from the classes, things she did, and connections.

Today we’re highlighting Jaki Svaren, a cherished long-time member of our guild who studied under Lloyd Reynolds and went on to teach many students in the area, as well as at international workshops. She founded the PSC Menucha Retreat, an annual tradition, where calligraphers meet together each year to create and be in a creative, relaxing environment for a weekend.

September PSC Prompt: Write the first line from your favorite book! 📚

As we get into cozy weather here in the NW, it is prime time to dive into book. Whatever the genre, that first line introduces you in to that book's world. So show us which book's line got you hooked.

Throwback Thursday: Blake Bellamy, a collector from southern California, recently found this gorgeous Joyce Grafe, a late PSC member, original at a thrift store! It is signed, dated 1982, and features the detailed gold leafing that Joyce was well known for. Thanks for sharing this lucky find, Blake!

PSC Workshop: ✒️ The Calligrapher’s Process with Rick Paulus
Ready to take your calligraphy from practice page to finished piece?

Join former White House Chief Calligrapher Rick Paulus for a four-week studio workshop focused on the process of developing a completed work of calligraphy—from initial concept through final ex*****on.

Through a series of independent assignments, Rick will gently guide beginner and intermediate calligraphers through traditional materials, methods, and plenty of tricks of the trade. Students will explore watercolor, gouache, masking fluid, gold leaf, a variety of papers, and more while developing their own individual projects.
