Last September, I was able to enjoy breakfast, pastry goodies, and a yummy drink at a deaf operated cafe Woodstock Cafe @woodstockcafepdx in Portland. They often host asl social, asl game nights, knit sh*t and crotchet, bike meet up and so many other events there. Be sure to follow them on Instagram, and see their bio to see what events are coming up soon! Customers could do self order, or order via spoken language (like you see on the video), or type back and forth on the IPAD. There were different ways to communicate. I was able to do a meeting, and then some work at the cafe, and I observed so many different people coming in and out. No one seemed to struggle with communication. They knew that it was a deaf cafe, and was prepared to proceed with their orders in different ways. Some knew some signs, and some gestured, and in all, I believe that everyone left full and happy. Photo and video description: On top, a customer came and had a regular conversation with the deaf worker, and the deaf worker was able to read what the customer was saying. I think he was reading a script and imaging what he would do if he came into a coffee shop like this. Bottom picture: Me on the left in front of the Woodstock Cafe. In the right picture is a picture of the cafe information, “Welcome to the Woodstock Cafe, a non-profit, sign friendly community brought to you by Cymspace. Let me know if you have been there, or plan to add this on your to do list in Portland! #deaffriendly #woodstockcafe #deafoperated #whyisignatbiz #whyisign #askmewhyisign #deafcommunity #deafculture #signingcommunity 12/03/2024
