NASA gör det nu möjligt för vem som helst att skicka meddelanden till en modifierad Ipad ombord på den obemannade rymdfarkosten Orion, som just nu är på väg tillbaka mot jorden.

Meddelandefunktionen är en del av en teknikdemonstration för att testa olika kommunikationstekniker inför nästa del av Artemisprogrammet, som ska ta människor tillbaka till månen. Utöver Ipaden finns också ett system för röst- och videosamtal, samt röststyrning via en modifierad version av den trådlösa smarta enheten Alexa.

Under gårdagen genomförde Orion sin sista korrigering av banan inför återinträde i jordens atmosfär den 11 december. Farkosten gjorde även sin närmaste förbiflygning av månen, 1274 kilometer över ytan.

Orion utnyttjade månens gravitation för att slunga sig tillbaka mot jorden, där den kommer att slå ner i Stilla havet. Där kommer NASA:s Exploration Ground Systems Program och den amerikanska flottan att fiska upp farkosten med hjälp av dykare och båtar.
