✨ This Friday: Writing with Purpose Workshop ✨

Clear, compelling, and strategic communication is crucial for change, and writing is one important avenue for sharing scientific ideas and new information. But it can feel daunting to write something that’s scientifically accurate, easy to understand, impactful and interesting for readers who don’t have a science background. We can help.

In this virtual workshop, we’ll support you as you plan out how you’re going to strategically share your key messages in your writing, so that you can achieve your science communication goals.

✨ This Friday: Policy Pathways ✨

Policy shapes public life in many ways, and often is a necessary part of lasting change. Accurate information is vital to good public policy, but often people’s understanding of policy pathways starts and stops at elections. Yet there are many, many more ways to get involved in public policy, at all levels of governance!

This workshop takes a closer look at the variety of roles that people can play in the policy process, with an emphasis on accurately communicating science and knowledge.

💡 Learn about the many pathways for policy engagement
💡 Identify policy pathways that align with your goals and strengths
💡 Develop a plan for moving along a policy pathway you identify
💡 Receive feedback on your plan

✨ This Friday: Responding to Conflict ✨

Conflict is inevitable in life—but it doesn’t always have to be destructive. If we are prepared to stay curious about the real source of the conflict, and open to others’ perspectives, we may find new possibilities and pathways forward. While it can be challenging to keep communicating in a constructive way when people disagree with us, we can build our skills so that we’re better equipped to handle conflict when it comes up.

During this virtual workshop, you’ll learn about different types of conflict and ways to recognize and manage them, as well as practices for building your own resilience and skills. You’ll also have the opportunity to try some techniques for improving your understanding of the conflict, and processes for communicating through conflict more productively.

✨ This Friday: Communicating Risk Workshop ✨

Every day, we all make decisions that require us to consider risk, but it can be challenging to communicate risk to others in compassionate, meaningful ways. We know more than ever about how risk information is processed in the brain, and applying those insights to our risk communication will help our audiences better understand risk and make more informed decisions about their health, safety, and the environment.

In this workshop, you will:

💡 gain a deeper understanding of the science behind risk communication;
💡identify and begin to draft the different components of a plan for communicating risk around a topic that’s important for you;
💡practice revising a key risk message to be more meaningful, compassionate, and actionable for your particular audience; and
💡receive feedback on your message from peers and trainers.

When science meets public concern, conflict and policymaking, science communication can get complex fast.

You may be asked to explain risk, navigate disagreement, discuss tradeoffs, or engage in policy with people who bring very different perspectives to the table.

Our new 4-workshop series, COMPASS Skill Sprint: Communicating Science in Complex Settings, is designed to help scientists and technical experts build confidence communicating when it matters most.

Over four weeks, we'll explore how to:
✨ Make your work resonate with people outside your field,
✨ Communicate risk clearly and effectively,
✨ Navigate conflict productively, and
✨ Connect science to U.S. policy.

🎓️ You also have the option to receive a Professional Certificate upon completion. If you're ready to grow your impact, join us!
