A lot of people try to train through pain, “stretch it out,” or just wait for things to calm down.

Meanwhile they stop running. Stop lifting. Stop trusting their body.

That’s exactly why we built this.

For $97 you get:

✅ 75-minute full-body performance PT evaluation

Running means a lot to people.

It’s stress relief. Confidence. Community. Identity.

So when injuries start changing how someone trains, races, or feels during runs, it affects more than just mileage.

The goal is never just getting runners “out of pain.”
It’s helping them:
train consistentlytrust their body againstop second-guessing every acheshow up on race day feeling strong
Lately we’ve been fortunate to work with more runners chasing big goals — PRs, first races, strong training blocks, and comebacks after frustrating setbacks.

These messages never get old.

Really grateful for the trust and excited to keep building within the running community here in Maine. 🏃‍♂️

Meet Dr. Matt Salvatore!

Originally from Central Massachusetts, Matt is joining Engine Room with a strong focus on helping athletes and active adults get back to doing what they love.

He earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Springfield College and has a particular interest in ACL rehab, return to sport, and working with runners and lifters who want to perform at a higher level and stay injury-free.

Matt is also a certified provider, which means he’s trained to work specifically with lifters and athletes who don’t want to be told to stop training, but instead need a plan to keep moving, modify intelligently, and come back stronger.

No outdated advice. No fear-based messaging. No “just stop lifting” or “you’ll make it worse.”

Just a clear, evidence-based plan to keep you training and progressing.

His approach is simple: bridge the gap between rehab and training so you’re not just out of pain, you’re back to moving, lifting, and competing the way you want to.

Outside the clinic, you’ll find him in the gym, hiking, golfing, or watching Boston sports.

He’s new to Portland and already looking for good food spots, so drop your recommendations below 👇

Matt starts booking May 12.

Most coaching doesn’t fail because athletes “don’t listen”… it fails because they’re listening to too much.

We overcue. We overcorrect. We try to micromanage movement into a perfect-looking rep… and in doing so, we quietly strip away the one thing the nervous system actually needs to learn:

Variability.

Clean movement isn’t created by repeating one “ideal” pattern.
It’s built by exploring multiple solutions, making small errors, and letting the system self-organize under real constraints.

If every rep looks identical, you’re not necessarily seeing mastery…
you might just be seeing compliance.

Skill acquisition isn’t about perfection.
It’s about adaptation.

Sometimes the best coaching cue is knowing when to say less… so the athlete can actually learn more.

7 weeks post-Achilles repair, these were the tools that helped me stay mobile and get back to work in the clinic:

• 👢Even Up – after surgery, your “surgical leg” can feel shorter. Even Up lifts that leg to level your hips and spine, reducing compensatory stress on your back, hips, and knee as you transition to weight bearing.

• 🏴‍☠️ iWalk 2.0 – traditional crutches force you into awkward movements. Hands-free mobility lets you walk more naturally, while respecting non-weight bearing restrictions.

• 🧦 Incrediwear compression sock – post-op swelling is normal, but excess fluid can slow recovery. Gentle compression improves circulation, reduces swelling, and supports tissue healing while you’re on your feet or standing.

These tools helped me move well, stay comfortable, and feel more in control early in my recovery.

💡 Curious about post-op mobility tools or dealing with swelling after Achilles surgery? Drop your questions below!

Patients who believe they can improve with conservative care are more likely to actually improve. Not because of blind optimism — but because belief shapes behavior, effort, consistency, and how the nervous system interprets threat.

Add in a strong therapeutic alliance — feeling heard, understood, and having a clear plan — and outcomes improve even more. Adherence goes up. Fear goes down. Load tolerance builds.

This isn’t anti-surgery or anti-injection. Those absolutely have a role.

But a large percentage of orthopedic conditions respond very well to progressive loading, education, and time.

If you understand what’s happening…
If you trust the process…
If you commit to the plan…

The body adapts.

And that’s usually where the real progress starts.

One leg can’t train? Your other leg can still do work. 🦵🧠

It’s called cross-education. Training the healthy limb preserves strength and coordination on the injured side through nervous system adaptations.

What the research shows:
• Up to 50–80% strength retention on the immobilized side
• Driven by neural changes, not muscle growth
• Heavier, controlled unilateral work transfers best

Why it matters:
Injury or surgery doesn’t mean doing nothing. Smart contralateral training helps limit strength loss and makes returning to full loading easier.
