In Full Bloom Container Gardens

As we welcome springtime (or begin to long for it!), creeping phlox will be one of the first bursts of color to grace our gardens.

Creeping phlox produces a colorful spring carpet of soft pastel hues—pink, white, dark purple—and they are all stunningly beautiful. This early blooming perennial is often used in rock gardens, sloping terrain, or as a gorgeous ground cover. Creeping phlox sometimes may create a waterfall effect as it grows.

When planning your spring flowers, consider growing it in between pavers, in a planter or just as a part of a bright spring bed as well.

When Creeping Phlox is blooming you know that spring has really arrived! 🌸🌿

This photo was taken on my stepfather's land in Montville, Maine. He was part of a commune that was established in 1972.

Originally from California, my stepfather found his way to Maine on the drift of the back-to-the-land movement, where he also found many other young people who shared a dream of purchasing land together. The vision they shared was deeply steeped into the countercultural mythos of that time.

The commune, Twitchell Hill, was a testament to their beliefs. The structure and land are still there, and several of the members are still affiliated with the land and with the commune, although they do not live there— with the exception of one member who resides at Twitchell Hill in the summertime as a respite from NYC.

Taken at the Twitchell Hill Reunion almost ten years ago, this image brings back a flood of memories and reminds me of Maine's storied history and tradition of progressive experiments. Although I never aspired to live like he did, I see the beauty and collective wisdom in a shared dream they all had many years ago.

With all this snow, we can’t help but dream of springtime and fields of poppies!

Oriental poppies are big gorgeous bursts of color—they make the garden sing. Pair them with lavender and cosmos for a stunning combo. 🌿🌞

We all need a little color in our lives right now, and Orchids are a beautiful way to keep a colorful, blooming plant in the winter. A healthy Orchid should flower for three months before loosing its blooms (by then, spring will be here)! There are so many varieties of Orchid to pick from—choosing is half the fun!

Make your own succulent container with In Full Bloom Container Garden’s Founder & Creative Director, Rebecca Goldenthal. At this hands-on workshop at The Urban Farm Fermentory, you'll learn all about succulents, how to select the right varieties, and design tips on making a beautiful container. Those attending will plant a container to take home as Beca provides design inspiration and discusses best practices for proper planting and care. Your container will make a great addition to your home décor or can be given as the perfect homemade gift.
