Rider Family,

I am excited to announce the hiring of Jakob Bass as the next Head Coach of the Roughrider Wrestling program.

A proud Roosevelt alumnus, Coach Bass brings 14 years of experience within the program, including four years as a student-athlete and the past 10 years as a volunteer and assistant coach. During his time under former Head Coach Justin Hollingshead, Bass led the Roosevelt youth wrestling program for four seasons and oversaw the girls wrestling program for three seasons.

His leadership has helped develop multiple state placers, district champions, and regional champions. Among the accomplishments he is most proud of is the girls wrestling team earning the highest team GPA in the state during the 2024–25 season.

Coach Bass believes in a philosophy centered on academic excellence, personal growth, and creating a fun yet physically challenging environment for student-athletes. His deep connection to Roosevelt Wrestling and commitment to developing well-rounded students make him an outstanding leader for the future of the program.

Please join us in welcoming Coach Bass as the new leader of Roosevelt Wrestling.

Princess Jasmin has been busy over the last few weeks traveling with the Portland Rose Festival Court! Take a look at some of her experiences. From parades, to volunteer work, to meeting dignitaries, she's had a lot to do.

Tomorrow, June 5th, the new Queen of Rosaria will be crowned. We are sending all our positive vibes to Jasmin as she waits to see if she receives the crown, but regardless of the outcome, we've been extremely proud to have her representing Roosevelt and our community this year.

Roosevelt High School is proud to announce the hiring of Alex Melson as the next Head Football Coach of the Roughriders. Following a highly competitive search process, Coach Melson emerged as the clear choice to lead our program due to his proven success as a coach, commitment to student development, and vision for building a culture rooted in relationships, accountability, and excellence. His experience as both an educator and coach aligns closely with Roosevelt's mission of developing successful students, leaders, and community members.

Alex Melson brings 12 years of coaching experience and nine years of service as an educator to Roosevelt High School. Most recently, he served as Defensive Coordinator at Clackamas High School after previously leading the football program at Grant High School as Head Coach.

During his three seasons as Head Coach at Grant, Melson guided the Generals to a PIL Championship and two playoff appearances while earning PIL Coach of the Year honors in 2022.

A Portland native, Melson grew up in Northeast Portland and graduated from Grant High School before continuing his academic and athletic career at Western Oregon University. While playing collegiate football for the Wolves, he earned a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and later earned a Master's degree in Education from Grand Canyon University.

For nine years, Melson has served as a Health and Physical Education teacher committed to supporting students in reaching their full potential. He believes extracurricular activities provide some of the most impactful opportunities for schools to develop the whole student by fostering confidence, leadership, resilience, and meaningful connections that extend far beyond graduation.

Melson and his wife, Monique, along with their daughter, Railei, are excited to become part of the Roosevelt community and look forward to contributing to the continued growth and success of Roosevelt High School.

"Roosevelt has always had a strong sense of community pride. Because of its commitment to student excellence, I am excited for the opportunity to use football as a vehicle to foster relationships that support our student-athletes on and off the field. The Roosevelt football experience will be rooted in meaningful and impactful experiences that challenge students to grow as athletes, leaders, and teammates while creating memories and lessons that will stay with them long after graduation."
