Ever wonder why some limited edition teas stick around while others disappear?

Sometimes a tea is so loved that we decide to make it part of our permanent collection. Sometimes we thought we could only get a small batch, but the next harvest becomes available. And sometimes we’re testing out a new region, style, or premium tea to see if it’s something our customers want year-round.

Tea is agricultural, and every harvest is a little different. Some teas truly are only available in small quantities, and some change too much from one pluck to the next to bring back in the same way.

That’s part of the magic of limited editions: they let us explore, experiment, and occasionally discover a new forever favorite.

This exceptional Japanese hojicha powder is crafted from the stems of shade-grown tencha, the same carefully cultivated leaf used to produce matcha. During matcha production, the stems and veins are meticulously removed before the leaf is dried and stone milled. Rather than discarding those stems, the tea makers lightly roast them, then finely mill them into a silky powder.

Because the source material comes from tea plants grown specifically for matcha production, this hojicha has an uncommon depth and refinement. Produced in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, the roast is intentionally gentle, preserving the sweeter, more nuanced qualities of the tea instead of overwhelming it with heavy smokiness.

The cup is smooth and nutty with notes of cocoa, toasted grain, and a faint hint of the marine character found in fine Japanese teas. This powder shines in lattes, where milk and a touch of sweetener bring out its rich, roasted sweetness. It’s also excellent in desserts, baked goods, and other culinary creations.

Black Mudan, or "Black Peony," is a Chinese black tea that with a smooth, well-rounded character and beautifully layered flavor profile. Crafted with care, this tea offers a luxurious cup that is as complex as it is approachable, making it a perfect choice for both seasoned tea drinkers and curious newcomers.

Flavor Profile
Black Mudan delights the senses with notes of stone fruits like apricot and peach, complemented by the notes of browned butter and maple syrup. Subtle hints of hay and dried grass add a rustic charm, while floral undertones reminiscent of lavender and honey bring a delicate sweetness to the cup. The finish is smooth, with a slight sweetness and a lingering hint of dried plums and toasted grains.

With its low astringency and rounded mouthfeel, Black Mudan is a tea that invites you to savor its complexity. Whether you enjoy it plain or with a touch of milk, its refined sweetness and gentle floral finish make every sip a memorable experience.

Why do we package our tea in bags instead of tins?

It comes down to freshness, quality, and keeping tea more affordable.

Our resealable bags help protect tea from two of its biggest enemies: air and light. Air can oxidize tea over time, changing its flavor and aroma. With a flexible bag, you can gently press out extra air before sealing it again, helping your tea stay fresher for longer. The bag also keeps light off the leaves, which helps protect the tea from degrading over time.

Bags are less expensive and easier to ship than tins, which helps us keep costs down for our customers. Less packaging cost means more of what you’re paying for goes toward the tea itself.

That said, we know tins can be really convenient, especially if you like a tidy tea cabinet. If you prefer to transfer your tea into a tin, we recommend choosing an opaque one with an internal plastic cap that can be pushed down toward the tea. That helps reduce the amount of air the leaves are exposed to between cups.

Beautiful tins are lovely. Fresh tea is lovelier.
