Scottish Opera branches out with Songs for Saplings. 🪴 Scottish Opera is taking a ground-breaking leap into forestry with Songs for Saplings! We’re partnering with Rosyth’s Populus Institute to help Scotland achieve its goal of planting five trees per person through the power of opera- all based on cutting edge research released by Populus Institute’s Bioacoustic Studies Department in November 2024. Groundbreaking studies from Populus Institute reveal the vibration frequencies (440-1,760 Hz) produced by trained classical singers increases calcium ion channel activation in plant cell membranes. Based on our Opera Highlights format, our cast of singers will tour 18 nurseries across Scotland, starting at Deaconsbank in Glasgow with new production curated to maxmise growth opportunities for young saplings. Director of Music, Fiona MacSherry has curated an exciting programme based on the Institute’s latest findings, with selections for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor and baritone. Pianist Willow Firwood joins the project as both Musical Director and accompanist. Performances are strictly sapling-only to ensure a stress-free environment. However, Scottish Opera’s resident filmmaker Antonia Bain will document the remarkable growth responses in a stunning time-lapse film scheduled for release in 2027. Plants can expect a programme of Verdi (for maximum vertical growth), Donizetti (for branch development) and Mozart (for increased chlorophyll production). The eagle-eyed will note Puccini’s absence, due to a correlation with premature needle shedding amongst Scots Pines—an unexpected hormonal response researchers have termed “emotional defoliation syndrome.” As Dr. Fearne Birch of the Populus Institute explains, “When Scotland’s saplings mature, they’ll be the most cultured trees in Europe. We’re not just growing trees; we’re growing arboreal connoisseurs.” Stay tuned for our cast and creatives announcement.
