Be careful out there paddlers. Always dress for the water temp and wear your lifejacket!

"Spring might have finally arrived in Maine, but inland and coastal waters are still dangerously frigid.

On a single day in May, the state saw two paddling deaths, one a sea kayaker near Deer Isle and the other a paddleboarder on Graham Lake in Ellsworth. Lindsey Chasteen, a spokesperson for the state medical examiner’s office, said cold water could have been a factor, but she was unable to definitely say whether the temperature had an impact in those cases. Officials said they believe neither person was wearing a life jacket."

This summer, we're partnering with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to offer a free, week-long program for local 7th and 8th graders that combines sea kayaking with coastal science.

It's called SEEK — Science, Exploration, and Education from a Kayak. Five days on Casco Bay and the surrounding coastline, paddling with a kayak guide and a coastal scientist, exploring beaches and marshes, and learning firsthand how these ecosystems work.

Spots are limited. If you know a Portland-area middle schooler who would love this, the interest form and more information can be found here:
