Last night, the Modis team in Portland spent a couple of hours packing nearly 7,000 pounds of oats at the Oregon Food Bank while listening to Queen, Vampire Weekend, Journey, J.Lo and Lizzo. We had a couple of kids at our workstation who had no idea who the first four artists were, but rapped every Lizzo lyric.

Can you believe 2019 is almost behind us? We hope you take some time to pause and reflect on your key takeaways from this year. Here are a few of ours that may serve as a reminder to you, as well:
1. Look at your career from a holistic perspective. It should help you tap into a world a lot larger than you.
2. A major key to growth is to trade your ego in for "I was wrong."
3. Certainty is overrated. Embrace the opportunity to improvise.
4. Show up and take initiative in your career, in your relationships, and in your community.
5. Know when to pause. Know when to express gratitude.
We are thankful for you - our community - and for our team. We're small, but our impact is greater than our individual parts. Our last collaboration for 2019 was to assemble Welcome Boxes for children entering Oregon's foster system through Every Child Oregon. We partnered with Bling Dental to fill each box with items that you and I readily have access to. Cheers to more of this in 2020.
Happy New Year!

Yesterday, our team at took some time out of our day to assemble Welcome Boxes for an incredible organization called Every Child. Every Child aims to provide love, care, and support for vulnerable children and families in Oregon in partnership with Oregon's Department of Human Services.
Last year, 11,238 children spent time in foster care in the state of Oregon. The majority of children coming into the foster care system must wait in a Child Welfare office for at least two hours while a social worker tries to find a suitable living arrangement. As you can imagine, it's a time of high anxiety for a child that has recently been removed from their home. That's where the Welcome Boxes come in.
Together, we collected toys, coloring books, puzzles, snacks, hygiene essentials, and encouraging notes for children entering the foster care system in an effort to occupy their time and make the transition into their new environment a little bit easier.

You know you like your coworkers when you choose to spend a weekend with them. This past weekend, our Seattle and Portland offices were hosted by VP Sam Shields for an amazing holiday party! This gave us an opportunity to not only merge teams, but to meet one another's families.
The delicious food, ping pong, and dancing are just a few highlights from this memorable night. HUGE thanks to Sam & family for bringing everyone together under one roof, and setting the precedent for the close bond we all share. This is family.
*The designated photographer for the night was having a lot of fun - so this is as close to a group shot as we got, and there are quite a few vital people from our team missing from it. We'll get it right next time. ;)

A strong indicator of how much your company values you is the opportunities they provide for you to grow and connect with your community.
There are a few systems in place at Modis that motivate us to become better, professionally AND personally. One perk is that our leadership encourages each of us to get away from our desk and volunteer for causes that benefit youth, through a program called Win4Youth.
Modis Portland partnered with Children's Cancer Association last Friday to volunteer for the Holiday Ale Fest and it was one of the best experiences we've shared. We proudly stand behind CCA's belief that every child deserves a long & wonderful life, or at the very least, a short, wonderful life.

We want to pause before we head out for the long weekend and express our gratitude.
