"On the piano, play mainly the things that you enjoy, even if your teacher doesn't assign them to you. You learn so much from things you enjoy that you don't even notice that time is passing." -- Albert Einstein giving musical advice to his son Hans Albert.

Chord progressions are the backbone of most music, creating the emotional and harmonic structure of a song. A chord progression is simply a series of chords played in a sequence, and it can evoke different feelings depending on the combination and order of the chords.
Common Chord Progressions
1. I-IV-V: This is one of the most popular progressions. In C major, it would be C-F-G. It creates a sense of resolution and is often used in rock, pop, and blues. It feels uplifting and familiar, often evoking a sense of nostalgia.
2. ii-V-I: Common in jazz, this progression (Dm-G-C in C major) creates a smooth transition between chords, giving a sense of movement and anticipation. It often leads to a satisfying resolution.
3. I-V-vi-IV: This progression (C-G-Am-F) is used in countless hits. It combines a sense of hopefulness with a touch of melancholy, making it relatable and emotionally resonant. Many listeners find this progression catchy and comforting.
Emotional Impact
The choice of chords can dramatically change the mood of a piece. For example:
- Major chords tend to sound bright and happy.
- Minor chords can evoke sadness or introspection.
By understanding how different progressions affect mood, musicians can craft songs that resonate with listeners on a deeper level.
Relating to Readers
Think about your favorite songs—many likely share similar chord progressions. This familiarity creates an emotional connection, making the music memorable. Whether you’re dancing to an upbeat pop song or reflecting on a ballad, the underlying chords help shape those feelings.
Exploring chord progressions can also inspire you to write your own music. By playing around with different sequences, you might discover new emotional landscapes or capture a feeling you want to express.
In essence, chord progressions are like the roads we travel in music, guiding us through emotional journeys and helping us connect with the stories behind the songs.

The healing power of music reaches beyond our souls - it might help fight cancer!
Scientists found that Beethoven's iconic Symphony No. 5 destroyed cancer cells in the lab while leaving healthy cells untouched. (Study done in vitro, not in a human yet.)
Cancer cells were exposed to the thunderous "da-da-da-DUM" of Beethoven's masterpiece. What happened next astounded researchers - 20% of the cancer cells were eliminated, as if the music itself was conducting a symphony of healing.
Even more fascinating, another piece - Ligeti's haunting
"Atmosphères" - showed similar cancer-fighting properties. It's as if these timeless compositions carry a hidden power that science is only beginning to unlock.
Dr. Márcia Alves Marques Capella and her passionate team at Rio de Janeiro's Federal University aren't stopping there. They're expanding their musical palette to include the vibrant rhythms of Samba and Funk, searching for nature's own soundtrack to healing.
Could the future of cancer treatment include musical therapy alongside traditional methods? While early in their journey, these scientists are composing a new chapter in medical history - one where the transformative power of music might help heal not just our spirits, but our bodies too.
