Twenty-five years ago, Frederic Koeleman and Matthew Boyes opened one of the Pacific Northwest’s first lifestyle stores in Portland, Oregon — in what had once been a livery stable. They had spent years traveling Europe — Sweden to Spain — collecting antiques, art, and things that were simply too beautiful to leave behind.

That instinct for finding the right object in the right place never left. It became the foundation of everything Cielo does.

Today we work from two studios — our design studio nestled in a historic building on Portland’s Eastside, and a 17th century palazzo in the village of Piozzo, in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. Together they inform everything we do: the sourcing, the eye, the understanding of how beautiful objects and well-considered spaces can transform the way people live.

Antiques, mid-century finds, lighting, furniture, and carefully sourced objects from Europe and beyond are woven throughout both studios — and into every project we take on.

Our work spans furnishings and fabrics, architectural consultation, spatial planning, and full remodels. Every project begins the same way: with careful listening, and a long look at what’s already there.

An 18th century Swedish daybed in Clarence House Belgian linen, placed where it belongs — against windows specifically chosen to reduce UV and protect against fading, the city of Portland spread out below.

This is a home we’ve worked on across many dimensions — furnishings, fabrics, lighting, and an ambitious remodel in progress that will reshape the entry, primary suite, and living spaces entirely. The Council Crest Residence is one of those long relationships where trust deepens with every visit.

Meet Roe, our newest family member and Junior Designer!
He came to us from Oregon Dog Rescue, just turned one, and today was his very first site visit — already hard at work alongside Senior Designer Minsky, who has been on the job for 14 years. Here they are with principal designer Matthew, approving the freshly painted millwork and hardwood floor installation.

Valentines Day is a good time to reflect on our last trip to Italy. We stocked our Italian Design Office resource library with new fabric samples from Paris, sourced beautiful and unique antiques for our clients, saw some amazing architecture, and of course ate delicious local cuisine.
