Our Story

The Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge opened in 1922 making it the first restaurant and bar in Portland's Chinatown and the third oldest restaurant in Portland Oregon. The Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge is the first restaurant and bar to accept people of all races and genders to eat and drink together as equals in Portland Oregon. We have incredible food made by scratch in time honored tradition. Please support this beloved historic landmark.

One of Portland's hottest night spots and after hours clubs from the late 1970's on through today, the restaurant is known for inventiveness. Dishes such as Asparagus and Black Bean Sauce, Cream Cauliflower Chicken, and incomparable Original ABC Salad were created in its kitchen. Customers consistently praise the Fried Prawns as the best in the city. Chiefs and owners of many Chinese restaurants have been trained in The Republic style. All food is made in house from scratch.

Playing host to numerous celebrities such as Harry Belafonte, Danny Kaye, Henry Fonda, the Republic Cafe and Lounge are world famous. Generations of local luminaries and valued residents have made the restaurant home of family traditions, after work meetings, and late night excursions in the Old Town Nightlife District. While in the neighborhood, you can also enjoy Portland's Chinese Classical Garden.

The Banquet Room also serves as a venue for local Bands, Karaoke, and many other fun events. Our Banquet Room has a warm personal vintage feel to it with large independent booths and vintage Asian decor. This one of a kind gem is a treasure for those adventurous renegades looking for old school Portland still untarnished by time.
