TextileX Vibrant Spaces: Hyun Jung Jung X That Year

At “FREE EVENT”, the community at large will have an opportunity to become collaborators in the art by simply shopping a special selection of hand-picked vintage garments. In lieu of monetary payment, Hyun Jung Jung and THAT YEAR ask that visitors participate in the interactive artwork by sharing a personal story of regeneration in a private, anonymous recording booth. Thus, the currency of money will be replaced by an exchange of human stories, and the audio recordings will be compiled into an additional collective art piece. In this way, the event explores how our memories or ideas can become linked to specific textiles or garments more widely.
“FREE EVENT” will take place at Focus Group (), a retail space recognized as a hub for creative youth on Southeast Hawthorne, in the heart of Portland’s vintage scene. Visitors will also be able to taste a selection of traditional Korean snacks and beverages, prepared for the occasion by Go Bu Gi () a local family-run market, which has long served Portland’s Korean community.
Through this unique art experience, and in spotlighting meaningful local collaborators, “FREE EVENT” is intended to be a symbol of support for local independent businesses and the next generation of Portland’s creative community in the face of our uncertain times.

Join us June 26th & 27th at THAT YEAR for the launch of our karaoke collection.
To celebrate the release of the collection, we will be debuting a fully functional, interactive karaoke room installation in our gallery space. The multimedia installation takes our memories of karaoke rooms in Asia as it’s starting point, expanding it into an immersive environment of video, sound, light and photography.
Extending the after hours theme, THAT YEAR shop will transform into a pop up bar inspired by some of our favorite hangouts in Tokyo and Seoul for the duration of the launch, where the collection and other new releases will be available.
