Battery Powered Music aims to celebrate and disseminate music created using battery powered handheld electronic instruments. The raw musical creative power available in a handheld game system, a smart phone, or a re-purposed teddy bear heart is truly amazing. The proliferation of inexpensive and readily available electronic music production tools has led to a renaissance in electronic music. We here aim to take this to the streets, care to help spread he good vibes, pulses, squelches and bleeps.

A night of battery-powered electronic music and collaboration at Backspace, continuing every other Monday (opposite Dorkbot) at 8pm. The evening is a battery-powered music ensemble jam and open mixer session. Inclusive, fun and inviting (and at times and epic mass of grinding handheld techno!). Certain nights will also feature solo artists, small ensembles and touring artists, all within an open space of structured improvisation and collaboration. We support upcoming independent producers in an atmosphere of experimentation and co-creation that will encourage production of electronic music using affordable battery-powered instruments. Battery powered music production is an expansion set for the well-established genre of chip tune. As for how this differs from chip tune…well chip tune was a genre built around that pulse wave sound of the 8 bit chips in the earlier gaming systems, handhelds and PCs. Battery powered music welcomes this rich classic sounds and also invites the polyphony of voices available in bent instruments/toys & the newer 16 bit battery-powered musical systems. We are interested in innovations in battery power, rechargeable technologies. If you have found or built and somewhat mastered a viable flexible music production instrument that is battery powered bring it!
