🔥 HOMEOWNER SATURDAY: YOUR DRYER VENT COULD BE TRYING TO BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN.

Okay, maybe that sounds dramatic.

But this is one of those little home-maintenance things that is VERY easy to ignore… until it isn’t.

Every time you run your dryer, lint is moving through that vent system. Some gets caught in the lint screen, but some can make its way into the vent.

And when that vent gets packed with lint?

🔥 Your dryer has to work harder.
💸 Your clothes can take longer to dry.
🌡️ Heat can build up.
🚨 And a clogged dryer vent can increase fire risk.

That little lint screen you clean after every load?

GOOD. KEEP DOING THAT.

But don't assume that means your dryer vent is clean.

If it’s been a while since the vent was inspected or cleaned, put it on the homeowner to-do list.

Especially if you notice:

➡️ Clothes taking forever to dry
➡️ The dryer getting unusually hot
➡️ A burning smell
➡️ Lint collecting around the outside vent
➡️ The outside flap barely opening when the dryer is running

Your house doesn't always give you a giant flashing warning sign.

Sometimes it gives you a dryer that takes two hours to dry a damn towel. 😂

Pay attention to the little things. They can become big things FAST.

THAT FIREPLACE MIGHT BE MORE THAN A PRETTY FEATURE.

Because nobody falls in love with a house and then thinks:

“I can’t wait to spend a fortune heating this thing.” 🫠

In Maine, how a home is heated matters. A LOT.

Having multiple heating options can give you flexibility when fuel costs, weather, or your heating needs change.

Maybe you've got:

🔥 Oil
🔥 Heat pumps
🔥 Wood stove/fireplace
🔥 Propane
🔥 Electric

Having options means you're not necessarily putting all your eggs — or your heating bill — in one basket.

But don't just see a wood stove and assume it's going to save you money.

Ask questions:

How does the primary system perform?
How old is it?
What does it cost to operate?
How efficiently does the home hold heat?
Is the secondary system actually usable?
When were the chimney, stove, or other components last inspected/serviced?

Because $300+ heating bills hit a whole lot differently when you have zero alternatives. 😬

A pretty fireplace is nice.

A home with multiple practical heating options? Now, THAT is a feature I want buyers paying attention to.

Because in Maine…

Winter doesn't care what your budget was. ❄️😂

🌲 DISCOVER MAINE: WHEN MAINE SHIPPED ICE AROUND THE WORLD

Before refrigerators, Maine had a pretty wild export business:

ICE.

In the late 1800s, the Kennebec River became one of the major ice-harvesting centers in the country. By 1882, about two-thirds of the 1.5 million tons of ice harvested in the U.S. came from the Kennebec River. Thousands of workers came to the river each winter to cut, haul, and store it.

And they weren't just supplying Maine.

Kennebec ice was loaded onto ships and sent south to major cities and even as far as the Caribbean and Central America.

Think about that for a second…

Maine was literally shipping frozen river water to people who needed to keep their food cold. 😂

Ice houses lined the Kennebec, farmers and horse teams became part of the industry, and communities along the river made serious money from something most of us now get from a freezer in about 30 seconds.

Then refrigeration came along…

…and Maine's ice empire melted away. 🧊

That's another reason I love Discover Maine.

There are SO many pieces of our state's history hiding in plain sight.

Did you know Maine used to be an ice-exporting powerhouse? 👀

🚨 THE FED JUST RAISED RATES.

And before you panic about your mortgage rate… let’s talk. 👀

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate 0.25% today, bringing its target range to 3.75%–4.00%.

But here’s the part that gets missed:
A Fed rate hike does NOT automatically mean mortgage rates just jumped 0.25%.

Mortgage rates are influenced by a much bigger picture — including the bond market, inflation, economic expectations, and investor demand.

So what does today’s move actually mean for home buyers, sellers, and homeowners?

That’s where it gets interesting. 👀

Don’t let one headline make your real estate decisions for you.

Bad paint? Paint it.
Outdated bathroom? Renovate it.
Hate the floors? Rip ’em out. 😂

But the neighborhood?

The commute?

The 20-minute drive to literally EVERYTHING? 👀

Yeah… good luck renovating that.

This is one of the biggest things I want buyers to think about BEFORE they fall in love with the pretty stuff.

Because countertops can be replaced.
Walls can be moved.
Fixtures can be upgraded.

But you’re buying the location too.

So when you’re house hunting, don’t just ask:

“Do I love this house?”

Ask:

“Do I love where this house is?”

Because the perfect kitchen isn't going to make you love a location that doesn't fit your life.
