Self Portrait Somewhere Else

“I have never quite lived my life as ‘Here’s me,’ but rather ‘This is what I am interested in and passionate about.’”
—Katherine Ace
Katherine Ace borrows from the Dutch vanitas still-life tradition of the 16th and 17th centuries, where painters filled their compositions with skulls, clocks, and extinguished candles to remind viewers that life is brief and earthly pleasures fade. Ace adopts that structure but shifts its meaning. Her scene is filled with books, photographs, pet cats, and art supplies. Where vanitas warned against attachment, Ace shows identity as built from the joy of making and the bonds of daily life.
Ace passed away in 2023. During the pandemic she created Ace Bob Ross, a free YouTube series still available today, sharing her oil-painting practice with high school students learning from home.

Artists draw people from life in different ways. Alice Neel asked sitters personal questions for hours while painting, hoping she could transmit it into the portrait. Amy Sherald asks sitters to look directly at the viewer with a specific expression and often chooses their clothing from her studio wardrobe. Andy Warhol said he was searching for “superstars” in his hundreds of filmed Screen Tests, which were really video portraits.
For First Saturday at the Schnitzer Collection, try making your own scratch-board portrait of yourself, someone else or one of the many identity centered artworks up now.

These three-dimensional paper-pulp works, made with Two Palms Print Studio, conclude a six-year investigation into the social significance of the bodega. A brilliant group of people celebrated their birthday by visiting the Schnitzer Collection this week. They created a game: make up a full narrative about the art, the artist’s backstory and the artist’s intention, then research and see what diverges. I’m going to start doing this when I research artists.
