Today marks the first day of Black History Month, and we here at MBSA ask you to join us in recognizing some of the essential histories behind this significant month.

Carter G. Woodson, now regarded as the “father of Black history,” first created “Negro History Week” in February 1926. Woodson and his organization - which still operates today - the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, sought to encourage “people of all ethnic and social backgrounds to discuss the Black experience.”

It was not until the 1970s when African American students and educators at Kent State first celebrated Black History Month. Other academic institutions across the country followed suit, and in 1976 President Gerald Ford became the first president to acknowledge its significance.

Today and every day, we seek to recognize the rich history and influential role of African Americans that have led us to our present day. Be sure to view our “BLM Resources” story on the front page of our profile!
