I have many students who come to me wondering how to know whether to use there, their, or they're in their writing (see what I did there) Okay, I'll stop now ๐
There- refers to a place. Ex: Her shoes are over there
Their- shows ownership. Ex: Their car is brand new
They're- a contraction, they + are. Ex: They're going to have so much fun at the concert

A little bit about me
- I love animals. Growing up I would visit my uncleโs farm and take care of the kittens there. I ended up adopting 2 of them (sorry mom) and I have always had an animal of some kind in my house. Dogs, cats, lizards, fish, snakes, spiders, you name it, we had it. In high school and college I fostered dogs and cats and I hope to begin fostering again soon!
- I love to read! As pictured here ๐
- I am the youngest of 4
- I like to try new hobbies and constantly learn. Recently Iโve been trying to learn French and German, improve my ice skating skills, and learn to draw. Iโve yet to improve from the classic stick figure drawing ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ
- Fun fact: my first and middle name can be spelled forwards and backwards (Anna Eve)

Here are 3 book recommendations that will help you get through the last bit of winter
1- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Although a classic childrenโs book, The Secret Garden is great for all ages. After only a couple of pages, you fall in love with the characters, question actions in the book and in real life, and want to escape into a garden. Once you begin reading this delightful story, you forget that it is cold and dreary outside.
2- The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Many books act as an escape and this book does just that (and more). This story is about magical children in an orphanage. Itโs comedic, witty, heartwarming, and you will often catch yourself smiling as you read. This YA fantasy novel is about unconditional love and after the first chapter, you are hooked.
3- Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
This story is one of my all time favorite books and whenever I dream of stepping onto grass with bare feet or feeling the sun on my face, I open this book and can immediately feel the seasons of spring and then summer. The main character, Anne, will make you giggle at her mistakes, make you wish you live on PEI, and make you feel like a kindred spirit.

Why I love to teach
- See my students grow, get inspired, and gain confidence
- Build relationships with my students and keep in touch years after I have worked with them
- Teach what Iโm passionate about
- Lightbulb moments (my favorite!)
- I learn SO much from my students
- I get to challenge my students to push beyond their personal limitations
These are only a handful of the reasons why I love to teach. Iโm pretty lucky I get to do what I love everyday!

Sometimes life takes you on a path that you didnโt expect and that path ends up being the best thing that ever happened to you.
I often get asked why I chose to become a teacher, and more recently, a tutor. When I was younger I wanted to be an astronaut (then realized Iโm claustrophobic), dreamed about being a NICU nurse for over 10 years, and when I entered college as a biology major, I quickly realized that I had no desire to take science classes ๐
I changed my major to English Literatute after my first semester and immersed myself in reading every book I could find, teaching to people of all ages, and studying abroad at the University of Oxford. I planned on teaching the English language in various countries, but my plans had to quickly change.
Covid hit right before I graduated college and I started teaching the violin online. I loved meeting students from around the world, but I knew I wanted to teach English literature.
I started my masters program, completed student teaching at two high schools, and learned how to teach effectively. Although I loved working with large groups of students in person, working 1-on-1 online allowed me to get to know my students better.
With a LOT of help from family, many hours spent editing, signing legal forms, and preparing materials, Empowered Minds Tutoring was born!
P.S: If youโre ready to stop feeling like you canโt get ahead in English class and want to feel confident while improving your grades, message me to begin working together. I canโt wait to hear from you!
