A forest garden is an innovative approach to landscaping that seeks to emulate a natural forest's structure and biodiversity. This type of garden is designed as an edible landscape where fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, herbs, vegetables, and other edible plants coexist in harmony. The key to creating a low-maintenance forest garden is to primarily use native species. Native plants typically require fewer interventions and resources, helping to establish a garden that is both self-sustaining and minimal in its need for maintenance.

The main objective of a forest garden is to foster a self-sustaining ecosystem that demands little upkeep, while also providing a rich variety of foods and creating a habitat for local wildlife. Although the ideal permaculture food forest incorporates native plants, sometimes the native options available might not align perfectly with your culinary preferences. This introduces a practical consideration in the planning phase, balancing ecological benefits with personal taste.
