The role of an Assistant Principal can be complicated. They should be student focused, relationship driven, instructionally prioritized, invested in learning and forever willing to evolve their thinking. The work can be messy, challenging and undeniably busy, but at the end of the day working with students, families and staff to make schools welcoming, predictable and safe is honorable. Thank you to all the APs who strive to do their best work each and every day.

One of the schools I do work for has their spirit week happening beginning Monday. I was super impressed with what the kids chose for Friday: “wear blue” in honor of autism awareness! An autistic student I work with mentioned how excited they are that there is a day to recognize ”his day” he told me! Kids are the reason my light is still shining!

I swung by the middle school track meet yesterday and was reminded,by the smiles on their faces, just how important it is to connect with kids outside of academics! I was able to cheer them on individually, watch them succeed, compliment their efforts and encourage them as they sprinted by! I love telling kids when they are really rocking it-and their faces tell me they love it too!

The trauma brain is a real thing. The impacts of such can be far reaching. I encourage educators and administrators to immerse themselves in any and all professional development they can in a effort to support those students who have or are experiencing trauma.

Reminding teachers that it’s ok not to stand and deliver is always a great conversation. The teaching craft is one of great ownership and expertise. Teachers are so thoughtful in their planning that it becomes difficult to let go of the direct teaching model. Allowing kids the opportunity to think through what you’re showing them, reading to them or opening their minds to will allow for greater perspective in the long run!

Listened to a great Ted speaker about why being respectful while at work is so important. Seems obvious, right? I’ve seen a decline in kind, professional behavior as of late. Time to support each other and thrive.

Teachers who strike are not doing so lightly. There are so many reasons to support a complete educational overhaul. There are more questions than answers, but we can’t keep putting a band-aid on a clearly open wound and think it’s going to heal.

It taking a village has never been more true! Share your knowledge, your expertise, your wisdom! There are so many who could benefit from it.

This is one of my favorite quotes: it’s easy to stand with, teach to, befriend those who get it or think like we do. The true test of character comes when you recognize and advocate for those who DONT think like we do, who need more or something else!

Let’s stop creating barriers for our learners. Develop their assets, encourage their thinking and watch them grow!!
