Welcome to The Classics Lab! Our goal is to make Classical subjects accessible to all! BIO:
Hello! I am Janette and I'm a proud history buff!

This is where you can find online, live courses offered in Classical subjects such as Latin, Ancient Greek, Greco-Roman history, and more. I have always loved to read which fueled my natural interest of history at a young age. My fascination with the Greco-Roman world led to me learning the languages of these two cultures; Latin and Ancient Greek. During my studies I have gained not only a lot of

This is a personal New Year message from over 1,900 years ago. It is part of the remarkable archive of writing tablets (thin pieces of wood written on with ink, similar to a postcard) which have been uncovered here at Roman Vindolanda.

The fragment is of a letter from Hostilius Flavianus to Flavius Cerialis the Commanding Officer of the IX Cohort of Batavians who were stationed at Vindolanda in about AD 97-105. He wishes Cerialis "a fortunate and happy New Year".

We share that ancient wish with you all again today and would like to thank you for all the likes, comments and shares in 2025. We look forward to sharing more of our news, images & events and of course the excitement from the Vindolanda & Magna excavations with you all in 2026.

✨ Our first Latin Study Club was a success! ✨
It’s always inspiring to see students persevere through the challenges Latin presents and come out the other side with greater confidence. 💪📚

One thing I see students struggle with the most when translating Latin (or Greek!) sentences is breaking the bad habit of reading them through the lens of English grammar. Below are some quick tips to help! 👇

Parents, looking for more ways your kids can interact with art? Our first podcast for kids and families launches today!

"If Objects Could Talk" is a playful storytelling podcast that imagines what antiquities at the Getty Villa Museum might say if they came alive and found their way to our podcast studio.

Each episode introduces concepts, objects, and themes found across antiquities museums, so you can take what you’ve heard and use it to start conversations on your next visit to a museum near you.

Subscribe and listen wherever you get your podcasts. Three episodes are out now, and new episodes come out every Monday through October 28. Find listener guides with bonus activities at getty.edu/podcasts/if-objects-could-talk/

A cool find at Magna, a Roman military fort in Northumberland, England!!

Magna Excavations | Samian Pottery

The summer holidays might be coming to an end soon but our excavation season isn’t quite finished yet. This recent find is a lovely large sherd of Samian pottery, highly decorated with animals depicted racing around the top half and part of a gladiatorial combat scene beneath.

There are more great finds and insights from the Magna team in our Dig Diary ⬇️
