This is a personal New Year message from over 1,900 years ago. It is part of the remarkable archive of writing tablets (thin pieces of wood written on with ink, similar to a postcard) which have been uncovered here at Roman Vindolanda.

The fragment is of a letter from Hostilius Flavianus to Flavius Cerialis the Commanding Officer of the IX Cohort of Batavians who were stationed at Vindolanda in about AD 97-105. He wishes Cerialis "a fortunate and happy New Year".

One of the incredible artifacts displayed at the National Archeological Museum of Madrid. They have a massive exhibit of Ancient Greek artifacts. This pottery vessel in particular shows Ajax son of Telamon carrying away the body of Slain Achilles during the Trojan War. This piece dates to the 6th century BC. A cool find at Magna, a Roman military fort in Northumberland, England!!

Magna Excavations | Samian Pottery

The summer holidays might be coming to an end soon but our excavation season isn’t quite finished yet. This recent find is a lovely large sherd of Samian pottery, highly decorated with animals depicted racing around the top half and part of a gladiatorial combat scene beneath.
