We were lucky enough to have local artist SORA, Live Performance Artist and her stunning calligraphy join us for part of the meditation event. Her piece will be hanging out with us in the shop for the next week ~ 🤍

For those new to us ~ we’ve been teaching incense classes for several years at our brick-and-mortar shop as well as places like Ritual Dyes | Rachel Bratcher (Portland), ei-to エイト (Awaji, Japan), and Sun Sun (Bingen, WA). Classes are led by Fumi’s founder, Mia Reiko Braverman, whose practice centers the Japanese diaspora of incense traditions.

Together we’ll learn about the history of incense in Japan (and beyond), experience specialty incense woods through the monkō practice of listening to incense, and make incense cones using all natural materials.

At its heart, this class is about cultural exchange and respect. You’ll leave with incense you made yourself and hopefully a deeper connection to the natural materials and histories that surround this ancient practice.

Thank you to Ada Matusiewicz | Portland Film Photographer for documenting our incense class. We rarely take photos during classes so it was a treat to have one documented. We love how Ada captures light, delicate moments, and holds space. If you are looking for someone to photograph an event or take your portrait, we cannot suggest her enough.

Our hours will be a little different this week to accommodate our participation in the Japan Fair this Saturday and attend some events at the Time-based Art Festival. Thank you for your understanding!

If you enjoy jazz, hi-fi systems, collecting vinyl records, interior design, or cafe culture, you might dig Jazz Kissa magazine. Jazz Kissa is a multi issue photo journal compiled by Katsumasa Kusunose who has be documenting the jazz coffee shop/bar scene in Japan for over a decade.

I have special memories from my time living in Japan visiting these types of spaces. Perhaps not under any specific definition of a jazz cafe but a cerain kind of music centric, bare bones staff, eclectic decor, 5 things on the menu kinda place. It left an imprint on me that has deeply informed the world of Fumi.
