this is part of something called epistemic deference, aka claiming ultimate moral authority based solely on identity alone. nevermind that any identity category is made up of individuals who have their own oftentimes conflicting opinions and thus no one can claim to speak for an entire group. nevermind that this claim relies upon ahistorical essentialized views of race/gender/ethnicity and a two-dimensional understanding of social privilege that acts as if it exists in a vacuum and not in specific contexts. nevermind that it’s actually just a way for people to assert unchecked self-righteous social power over others.

nonbinary is not at all the only identity category used for this kind of maneuvering, and not all nonbinary people do this. in fact I know plenty of nonbinary people who think this stuff is bu****it and are outspoken critics of it. and that makes COMPLETE sense because we can’t make generalizations or assumptions about people’s perspectives based on a single identity label that applies to them!! whoa!!!

genuinely we are not going to win if we are only willing to work with people who use the “right” language and have the “right” thoughts. we need to be willing to be mutually transformed through the act of setting aside our differences and coming together for the sake of our shared dignity as human beings and working people. it takes humility, compassion and tolerance for differing perspectives even ones we think are wrong!

At a certain point TERF referred to a coherent political stance and while that stance still exists the term itself has become a completely generalized thought-terminating accusation that is meant to shut people up. if you know my work on neoliberal identitarianism this pattern should be extremely familiar because it happens all the time—labeling someone in order to shame them and mark them for social exclusion. it has very little political substance and much more to do with maintaining a sense of moral superiority and in-group social status. not something I care about and if you don’t care for it you should be looking beyond the thought-terminating label and into the substance of what’s being expressed. but what do I know I’m just a stupid terf 🤪🤪🤪

this zine has always been about more than just my story. it’s about all of the stories that are still stigmatized and judged. all the experiences that are inconvenient and challenging for others but true nonetheless. it’s about your story. how you deserve to understand each part of your life without shame, without embarrassment, without judgment. just because it makes someone else uncomfortable or angry or afraid doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with who you are and the path you’ve taken to become yourself in this moment. and the more we all understand that about ourselves and one another, the less we feel threatened by stories that are different from our own, the more room there is to actually listen to each other and hear the similarities underneath the different words we use.

realistically the attitude I describe in this video is secretly how so many of us feel already lmao it’s just incredibly taboo to openly acknowledge it and it really shouldn’t be. just like it’s not taboo to wish your Christian friends Happy Easter or your Muslim friends Ramadan Mubarak while not subscribing to either of those religions. There are so many ways to show support and love for people with different worldviews and I think the more we decouple practices like using they/them pronouns from requiring thought conformity, the more people will actually be super happy to use they/them pronouns for others!!!

“THIS WAS JUST BECAUSE YOU PERSONALLY are an IDIOT who doesn’t understand gender IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NONBINARY IDENTITY” as if this wasn’t the way moooost people in q***r political circles thought about gender lmao. here’s how it went if you weren’t there: cis people are stupid and evil and shackled by their infantile views on gender, while trans people are enlightened genius saviors who would usher in the next phase of utopian human evolution if only cis people weren’t so evil and backward.

I was there baby. I lived it and breathed it. Yes not everyone who subscribes to this gender framework has such totalizing, cynical and essentialist views. However
1) it was and is still a dominant strain of thought in many q***r subcultures, as are other forms of liberal identitarianism masquerading as leftism. And
2) while I continue to support people’s autonomy to live and identify however they choose even when I don’t agree with it, I still think the framework of nonbinary gender ultimately reinforces regressive essentialist views on gender. It is obviously FAR from the only worldview that has this effect and I am critical of those worldviews as well while also being against banning them!
