FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Michigan Fraternal Order of Police Statement Regarding the Not Guilty Verdict in the Case of Former Warren Police Officer James Burke
The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police acknowledges today’s not guilty verdict in the case involving former Warren Police Officer James Burke.
From the beginning, we have maintained that every individual—regardless of profession—is entitled to due process, a fair trial, and the presumption of innocence. After hearing all of the evidence presented and receiving the court’s instructions, the jury rendered its verdict, and we respect the outcome of our justice system.
No verdict can erase the pain caused by this incident, and our thoughts remain with all those affected.
At the same time, today’s verdict reaffirms an important principle: criminal liability must be determined by evidence, facts, and the law—not by emotion, public pressure, or hindsight.
Law enforcement officers are often required to make split-second decisions in rapidly evolving situations while working to protect the communities they serve. When those actions are called into question, officers deserve the same constitutional protections afforded to every citizen. The integrity of our justice system depends upon those protections being applied fairly and consistently.
The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police is grateful to those who stood by Officer Burke throughout this process, including his family, friends, fellow officers, and the Warren Police Officers Association. We also recognize the professionalism of all parties involved in bringing this case to its conclusion.
Lastly, we would like to recognize the outstanding defense team at Defender of the Blue. Their commitment to protecting the rights of police officers is one of the many reasons attorney Marc Curtis was honored as the Michigan FOP Herb Adams Member of the Year. It is also a reminder of why every police officer should have the FOP Legal Defense Plan.
