🏆 Recruit Baseball 17U Red Advances to Championship Round After Strong Tournament Performance 🏆

Recruit Baseball 17U Red put together an impressive weekend, earning two victories and advancing to the championship game behind outstanding pitching, aggressive baserunning, timely hitting, and complete team baseball.

The weekend started with an 8-6 victory over Michigan Ignite 17/18U at Oakland University. After falling behind early, Recruit responded immediately and used patience at the plate and relentless pressure on the bases to take control of the game.

Brayden Milatz paced the offense, going 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBIs, while PJ Stieber added a triple and RBI. Kaden Heikkinen chipped in an RBI single, and DJ Lenear continued to create havoc on the bases.

Recruit swiped an incredible 12 stolen bases in the game, forcing Michigan Ignite to defend every pitch and every runner.

On the mound, Angelo Sgroi battled through three innings to earn the victory, while PJ Stieber came on in relief to record the save.

In bracket play at Avondale High School, Recruit followed with a 4-1 victory over MSA Saline.

Conner Gratopp delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just three hits and one unearned run while keeping MSA Saline off balance throughout the contest.

At the plate, Brayden Milatz came through once again with a clutch three-run triple, while Landon Kelley set the tone from the leadoff spot, collecting two doubles and scoring twice. DJ Lenear added an RBI double as Recruit punched its ticket to the championship game.

⚾ Advanced to the Championship Game

The boys earned the opportunity to compete for a championship at Wayne State University against South Oakland A’s 18U. Unfortunately, severe weather moved into the area and forced the championship game to be canceled before first pitch.

While the trophy was never decided on the field, this group proved once again what Recruit Baseball is all about—competing hard, playing the game the right way, and finding ways to win against quality competition.

We are proud of the effort, toughness, and growth displayed by this team throughout the weekend.

Player Development. Team Development. Winning Baseball.

BATTLES THROUGH DAY ONE

The boys competed hard all day Friday against two quality opponents, finishing with a tough 9-7 loss to MSA Saline and a hard-fought 6-6 tie against South Oakland A’s 18U.

In Game 1, Recruit Red battled back from an early deficit and took a 5-4 lead before MSA answered in the middle innings. Despite the setback, the offense continued to put together quality at-bats and pressure throughout the game.

Brayden Milatz led the attack, going 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. DJ Lenear collected two hits, including a triple, while driving in a run and scoring twice. Landon Kelley reached base three times, scored twice, and swiped three bags. Parker Stieber added a double, while Kyle Heikkinen contributed an RBI.

On the mound, Gibbs Blalock was outstanding in relief, allowing just one hit over three innings while striking out four.

Game 2 saw Recruit Baseball erase multiple deficits and battle South Oakland A’s 18U to a 6-6 draw.

Milatz stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-2 and finishing the day with four hits across the two games. Kelley reached base three times while adding an RBI, and Conner Gratopp delivered a clutch RBI single. Angelo Sgroi, Kyle Heikkinen, Parker Stieber, and Gratopp each added hits as the offense continued to grind out quality at-bats from top to bottom.

One of the biggest positives from the day was the discipline shown at the plate. Recruit hitters consistently worked deep counts, refused to chase pitches outside the zone, and forced opposing pitchers to work. The result was 15 walks drawn across the two games and numerous opportunities to put pressure on opposing defenses.

DAY ONE TEAM TOTALS

• 13 Runs Scored
• 13 Hits
• 15 Walks Drawn
• 5 Extra-Base Hits
• Aggressive Baserunning Pressure
• Strong Relief Pitching
• Consistent Quality At-Bats Throughout The Day

The results weren’t exactly what we wanted, but the effort, competitiveness, and approach at the plate were outstanding. This group continued to battle, respond to adversity, and compete until the final out of every game.

Back at it tomorrow as Recruit Baseball 17U Red takes on Michigan Ignite at 4:30 PM at Harwell Field on the campus of Wayne State University.
