Exciting new research is pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing for high‑performance superalloys!
A recent study explores how laser powder bed fusion (PBF‑LB) produces unique cellular solidification structures in a CoNi‑based superalloy. Using advanced techniques like TriBeam tomography and high‑resolution EBSD, the team uncovers how cells grow along preferred ⟨001⟩ crystallographic directions—shaping grain orientation, residual stress, and ultimately mechanical performance.
What’s especially fascinating is how alternating scan strategies cause cells to switch growth directions across melt‑pool boundaries, creating complex microstructures that influence strength and stress behavior in AM parts. These insights help pave the way for more reliable, high‑efficiency components in aerospace, energy, and beyond.
