Traditional Colonoscopy vs. CT Colonography CT colonography, also called virtual colonoscopy, is an alternative to traditional colonoscopy for those at high risk of complications. For the procedure, a small tube is inserted far enough into the re**um to fill the colon with air, though it is not advanced further. Then, a CT scan is performed, and the data is transferred to advanced computer software where it is used to construct virtual images of the colon. (See figures B, C, & D.) Studies have shown that virtual colonoscopy has detection rates similar to its traditional counterpart for most types of polyps. Although, flat, smaller growths may be left undetected. If polyps are found by CT scan, a traditional colonoscopy must follow in order for them to be removed. Because of this, those suspected of having polyps or other gastrointestinal issues (based on age, symptoms, and family history) a traditional colonoscopy is highly preferred.
