The Library houses approximately 161,953 volumes and employs a staff of 40, of whom 14 hold M.L.S. degrees.
The award-winning Plainfield Public Library, second largest in Union County, serves the Plainfield residential and business community, as well as residents of many neighboring communities. In addition to having a large book and video collection, the Library is heavily used by the community as a meeting place and as a distribution point for information about community events and services. Fifty-eight years ago, the library celebrated the grand opening of its new, modern building. A dedication ceremony took place on April 21, 1968, and activities were planned for an entire month. Tomorrow, June 13, the library will be celebrating a new chapter with the grand reopening of the same building - with 21st century improvements! Plainfield’s Caesar is the city’s first identifiable African American resident. He was a freed slave who served in the American Revolution as a teamster, driving a supply wagon for troops stationed at the Blue Hills Fort and Camp. Come hear his story and how he came to be commemorated on the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail!
