"The Sun Has Long Been Set" by William Wordsworth

The sun has long been set,
The stars are out by twos and threes,
The little birds are piping yet,
Among the bushes and trees;
There's a cuckoo, and one or two thrushes,
And a far-off wind that rushes,
And a sound of water that gushes,
And the cuckoo's sovereign cry
Fills all the hollow of the sky.
Who would go parading
In London, and masquerading
On such a night of June
With that beautiful soft half moon,
And all these innocent blisses?
On such a night as this is!

"June" by John Updike

The sun is rich
And gladly pays
In golden hours,
Silver days,

And long green weeks
That never end.
School's out. The time
Is ours to spend.

There's Little League,
Hopscotch, the creek,
And, after supper,
Hide-and-seek.

That live-long light
Is like a dream,
And freckles come
Like flies to cream.

"Inside a Shell" by John Foster

Inside a shell
There is the whisper of a wave.
Inside a feather
There is the breath of a breeze.
Inside an ember
There is the memory of a flame.
Inside a rock
There is the murmur of a mountain.
Inside a well
There is the echo of a wish.
Inside a seed
There is a the promise of a flower.

"Bed in Summer" by Robert Louis Stevenson

In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candlelight.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day.

"Hen's Song" by Rose Fyleman

Chick, chick, come out of your shell,
I've warmed you long and I've warmed you well;
The sun is hot and the sky is blue
Quick, chick, it's time you came through.

"What Happens to the Colors?" by Jack Prelutsky

What happens to the colors
when night replaces day?
What turns the wrens to ravens,
the trees to shades of gray?

Who paints away the garden
when the sky's a sea of ink?
Who robs the sleeping flowers
of their purple and their pink?

What makes the midnight clover
quiver black upon the lawn?
What happens to the colors?
What brings them back at dawn?

How Without Arms by JonArno Lawson

How, without arms,
did the sun
climb over trees?

And without knees
to sink on,
how did it sink behind them?

And without eyes,
how did it peek
through the leaves?

And without
being awakened,
how did it rise?
