The Observation Tower will soon look refreshed and ready to give you a bird's eye view of the region for the first time in 30 years!

The Allegheny County Parks Foundation, along with Allegheny County Parks, has begun the ambitious and highly requested restoration of the Observation Tower in North Park. Once the project is complete, the tower will once again welcome visitors to climb the 154-step spiral staircase to the 360-degree scenic view.

The structure was assessed and was reported to be in good condition, requiring minor structural repairs and updates to ensure the railings and domed roof meet modern building codes and public safety standards. The interior and exterior will be sandblasted and painted to reflect the original 1937 appearance. The unique terrazzo floor on the observation deck will be restored to its original beauty.

The surrounding landscape will receive improvements, including a concrete plaza with seating, paved walking paths, new native trees and plants, and a one-acre native wildflower meadow. Landscape improvements, which will also benefit the North Park Lodge, include accessibility features and an updated parking lot to make the surrounding area welcoming to all visitors.

We ask visitors to use caution when in the vicinity of the project site while work is underway.

A black bear has been spotted swimming in North Park Lake. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has been notified and is monitoring the situation.

If you are visiting the park, please use caution and give the bear plenty of space. Do not approach or attempt to interact with the animal. Keep pets leashed and under control at all times.

The best thing you can do is view wildlife from a safe distance and allow it to move through the area undisturbed.

Thank you for helping keep both visitors and wildlife safe.
