In an interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS’ “60 Minutes”, painter Amy Sherald spoke about her decision to pull out of her solo exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery after the museum considered removing her painting of a Black transgender Statue of Liberty, titled Trans Forming Liberty.

“There were conversations about the work being censored,” Sherald told Cooper. “The show is ‘American Sublime.’ It was a whole narrative, and a trans woman is a part of that narrative, for me.”

The process of this painting began with wanting to paint still frames of an angry Blac Chyna. While painting these portraits on a spare sheet of plywood, it made me reflect on my current emotions. When I began this painting in my Spring semester of 2022, I mentally found myself to be struggling with feeling out of place at my new environment of grad school while also trying to get a grip of the average MFA workload, making money, and taking care of my mental health. These thoughts led me to use Blac Chyna’s beautiful angry faces as a placeholder for myself.

Sticking with the theme of green, I randomly began sketching the little leprechaun from Lucky Charms cereal on top of the panel. When I began drawing the character, I didn’t necessarily have a conceptual reason for his presence, but visually, I did appreciate the juxtaposition of his cheerful mood with Chyna’s angry expressions. Another thing worth mentioning about this pop culture character choice was that since I was a kid, I’ve always hated Lucky Charms cereal. While having this opinion for years that the marshmallows tasted like flavored pieces of chalk, I still appreciated the aesthetic of its shapes, colors, cereal box and TV commercials.

Coming to this realization, I asked myself what were the chances that I was finally in school to earn my MFA yet was so unhappy at the same time considering that it was all I dreamed of prior to being accepted to school. That’s what inspired me to use the cereal’s font to spell out the words, “Good Luck”. As crappy as I felt, I understood that I had two more years until graduation, meaning that I had better tighten up and enjoy the ride. The creation of this multimedia painting was my own way of wishing myself luck through irony.
