World Day of Migrants and Refugees
Prayer Vigil, March, & Rally in the Strip District
Begin at 2 pm
At 21 St and Smallman (in front of St Stanislaus)
Conclude at Denny Park (near the Abraxas office)*
Gather with Pittsburgh area neighbors for an interfaith vigil, march, and rally to advocate on behalf of child migrants and vulnerable immigrants. As people of good will from all faiths and no faith, we’re honoring the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on the Catholic Calendar.
Pope Leo’s message for 2026 begins: “Each year the World Day of Migrants and Refugees invites us to turn our attention to different aspects of the complex phenomenon of migration. For this 112th World Day, the theme, “Even just one of these children,” draws our attention to the minors directly involved in the experience of migration and flight, to the care owed to them, and to the Lord’s promise that “whoever receives one such child in my name receives me” (Mk 9:37).

● Restore legal representation for migrant children
● Call on Governor Shapiro to fight for Immigrant Rights
● Shut down Abraxas: End the holding of unaccompanied children and teens at the secure detention unit run by Abraxas near Reading PA

Our Virtual MFA Alumni Reading Series Raising Our Voices will return on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 2 pm via Zoom, with a brilliant lineup of guest writers emceed by Kim Nall and Phillip Border!

LEE BAINS is a poet and songwriter from Birmingham, Alabama, who since 2012 has released four studio albums of what Rolling Stone calls “Southern gospel punk,” and will publish his debut poetry collection Work Lunch with Hub City Press in October 2026, after several of the poems were first published by The New Yorker in 2021.

JIM DANIELS is the recipient of the 2025-26 Michigan Author Award for lifetime achievement. His latest book, Late Invocation for Magic: New and Selected Poems, was published in January. He has authored over thirty collections of poetry, seven collections of fiction, four produced screenplays, and one collection of essays, An Ignorance of Trees.

TORLI BUSH is an engineer and poet who holds an MFA in Creative Writing from West Virginia Wesleyan College and serves as a poetry co-editor for Heartwood Literary Magazine. Torli’s first collection, Requiem for a Redbird was named as a finalist for the Weatherford Award in Poetry from Berea College and the Appalachian Studies Association.

DONNA WOJNAR DZURILLA works across genres and has appeared in the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Wild Wind and Tributaria anthologies, Northern Appalachia Review, Kaleidoscope, The Pittsburgh Quarterly, the Pittsburgh Review of Books, and Rust Belt. Her short story collection, Switchback and Other Stories, was shortlisted for the 2025 C&R Press Fiction Award.
