Spring is a good time to identify trees not only by their blossoms, but also by their buds.

Do you know your tree buds?

Who's up for a tree quiz? Identify these trees based on their buds. There are three different species. Hint: They're all native trees for wet areas. We'll post the answers tomorrow morning!

We love when people feel a connection to the trees they plant🌳❤️

Don't forget Fall 2020 applications are due by Friday, March 13th!

We think it's sweet that Pitt students named the trees they planted by writing on the tree stake! (Tree stakes stabilize a tree while they establish their roots.) What would you name your tree? Don't forget to apply for tree plantings by March 13! bit.ly/2QcXupj.

Though our winter has been pretty mild, we really appreciate the Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission taking the precautions to protect against winter salt spray! Salt and deicer can be very damaging for plants, so a salt shield is a great winter maintenance practice for trees planted along highly trafficked areas

Less snow and ice during this mild winter has meant less salt on the roads and driveways, which is good news for trees and plants! Just in case, some trees have salt shields to protect them from salt spray. TreeVitalize Pittsburgh planted 15 trees along Allegheny River Boulevard last fall, and the Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission is adamant about keeping the trees alive and healthy! If you have come to one of our tree plantings you should know the benefits of mulch! It's beneficial to trees in all of the seasons - including winter❄️

Our TreeVitalize program planted 20 trees in McKinley Park last fall with Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy; here they are getting some TLC and cozy, insulating mulch! Just one of mulch's many benefits is temperature control. In the winter mulch insulates the soil and tree roots and helps prevent heaving (which occurs from the ground repeatedly freezing and thawing) by maintaining more constant soil temperatures.
