WHY WE CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH... June 2026 marks the 161st year of the celebration of Juneteenth in North America, which is the celebration of the end of Chattel Slavery... In 2013 we "re-started" a new promotion of Juneteenth in Pittsburgh and by AUGUST 29TH, 2020, we got then-MAYOR BILL PEDUTO and the City of Pittsburgh to recognize and make Juneteenth a Citywide paid-leave Holiday for all City Workers... Juneteenth is important to Black Americans because in 1776, when White Americans broke free from English Rule, White Americans continued to enslave our people until the civil war rebellion in 1865 when Black folks gained our Freedom from Chattel enslavement... We are EXTREMELY PROUD of the fact that we persuaded the City of Pittsburgh to make Juneteenth a Citywide Holiday, and with the City's partnership with our annual Juneteenth Events to celebrate Black Freedom in this region ... Yes, this is undeniable PITTSBURGH BLACK HISTORY!!! BMP

In 1870 Black, White and Native folk in Pittsburgh marched to celebrate the end of Chattel Slavery and the beginning of Black Voting Rights in the United States... This original Parade was called the Grand Jubilee of Freemen Parade where over 5,000 people marched from Downtown, to the lower Hill, back Downtown to the North and held a memorial at Allegheny Commons Park East, and then back downtown to Market Square... On SAT JUNE 20TH, starting at 11am, we will host the Juneteenth-Grand Jubilee Parade in honor of the End of Chattel Slavery and Black Voting Rights which are under attack in America, from Freedom Corner through Downtown Pittsburgh on to Point State Park where we will host a ceremony highlighting our new enslavement in this American system... We need you to line the Streets and Join Us inside Point State Park... Spread the Word and SAVE THE DATE...
